The officer noticed Natalie’s frosty tone and tried to reassure her. “Ms. Stone, please don’t misunderstand. We only want Mr. Gunn to cooperate with our investigation. We need to confirm whether he crossed paths with the teacher during the time she was attacked.”
“I don’t know,” Natalie answered evenly. “My husband rushed the children to the hospital to check for residual toxins in their bodies. As for whether he ran into the teacher on the way, I can’t say I was here with the principal at the time. His phone fell into a puddle and no longer works. If you insist on questioning him, you can go to the hospital.”
She understood her duty to cooperate, but unease gnawed at her.
Why did it feel like she and Baron were being maneuvered into a trap? Why did Susie always end up in the middle of these schemes?
And yet no proof. Nothing she could hold on to.
That made it worse.
Seeing that Natalie, though cold, was still cooperative, the police exhaled in relief.
“Thank you, Ms. Stone. If further questions arise, we hope you and Ms. Sue will continue to assist us.”
“Of course,” Aubree replied quickly.
The principal seized the moment to step forward. “Look, none of us wanted things to turn out this way. Now that the police are involved, both Susie’s case and the teacher’s will be investigated thoroughly. For now, you should focus on recovery. When everything is resolved, then return to the kindergarten.”
Natalie narrowed her eyes but didn’t argue.
Aubree frowned, about to protest, but Natalie tugged her sleeve lightly. Reluctantly, Aubree nodded.
The two women left together, Chris following behind.
Out of earshot, Aubree huffed. “Natalie, the principal just doesn’t want to be involved. That’s why she’s telling us to stay home. It’s one thing for Finn–he’s injured–but why should Susie be kept away? That’s bullying.”
“It’s fine. Today’s events were far too strange. Even if the principal wanted Susie back, I

wouldn’t send her. I can’t shake the feeling someone is deliberately targeting my daughter”
That made Aubree sober instantly. “Do you have any leads?”
“No. Just a gut feeling. By the way–how’s your face? I was impulsive earlier, and I’m sorry.”
They were friends now, and Natalie felt she owed her an apology. Though she doubted she would act differently next time if her child was threatened, she still wanted to say it.
Aubree waved it off. “Forget it. I should head to the hospital to see my boy anyway.”
Natalie smiled. “Did you drive?”
“Yeah, the driver dropped me off. I know you’ve got a lot on your plate. Let’s connect later, okay?”
Natalie found herself genuinely enjoying Aubree’s straightforwardness.
“Alright.”
She watched Aubree climb into her car before returning to her own.
Chris had kept silent with Aubree present, but once she was gone, he spoke. “Ma’am, you really believe someone is targeting Susie and Finn?”
“Yes. It’s just instinct, but it’s strong.”
Natalie rarely felt intuition this sharply.
“Then I’ll send Stone family people to investigate quietly,” Chris said at once. “Every scheme leaves traces.”
“Do it.”
She didn’t hesitate.
Chris immediately began making arrangements.
When he was done, he asked, “Do we head home now?”
“No. To the hospital. I need to see Baron and the kids. I can’t settle otherwise.”
“Understood.”
He turned the car around.

Natalie rubbed her temples, sifting through every detail. Something had to connect.
And then–Anna.

The principal swore she’d seen Anna ten years ago at the same age she was now, and insisted Anna wasn’t a student here. Right after that, the teacher–who had been closest to Anna- turned up unconscious, dumped in the holly bushes.
It all circled back to that little girl.
But now Anna had vanished completely, leaving no trace.
How?
Natalie’s brows knit tighter.
“Chris,” she asked quietly, “is it possible for someone not to grow at all for ten years?”
