Jensen listened to the two of them, every muscle aching; he wanted to sneer, but he was afraid of drawing the guardsattention. He ground his teeth in fury but kept silent, inwardly Please, Hanselsee the message I sent him.

Natalie leaned against Baron; the familiar scent around him settled her.

The car rattled along for over an hour. Although Baron’s eyes were covered, his hearing was sharp. The route was long, and he noticed a sound repeat three times at regular intervals- they’ve driven around the same spot three times; they’re trying to confuse usand his mind began to work. By the time the car had been moving for an hour he knew they were only somewhere near the suburbs, but not exactly which one yet.

Natalie, who studied design and was sensitive to temperature and humidity, had the same impression: the air felt wetter, like near the sea. When she heard the faint sound of waves, it confirmed her guess. She brushed Baron lightly and said in a voice meant only for them, I think we’re in the outskirts. If I’m right, we’re-

—at the North Wharf.Baron finished for her.

Natalie paused, then smiled a little. Hearing that soft laugh eased something in Baron’s chest.

Don’t worry. My people will come for us.He didn’t explain how he’d sent the word out; Natalie didn’t ask. That complete trust she showed warmed Baron in a way he hadn’t expected.

Jensen couldn’t hear their whispering, but he could sense the warm closeness between them- and it stung him with jealousy.

Baron, you coward! You didn’t protect Natalie before, and now you’re laughing and joking? I bet you hired these people. How could you not be scared? You useless soninlawhow can

fool around now?he spat. you

Shut up!Jensen’s voice carried too loud. A couple of the masked men tensed.

Boss, this Jensen’s a problem. Maybe we should just kill him and dump the body, one of them muttered.

Their leader waved a hand. No. He is the president of Luke Corp. Our orders say not to clash with Luke Corp. Knock him out for now; we’ll deal with him later.

Jensen suddenly felt fear. I won’t keep quiet! You’re not to knock me out. If anything happens

The car jolted and came to an abrupt stop. Natalie nearly lurched from her seat until Baron steadied her with his leg. The leader frowned.

What’s going on?he asked.

We’re here, boss,” the driver said, embarrassed. I braked too hard back there.

Do that again and you’ll be walking, the leader snapped, then swung the door open.

Sea air washed over them; they were right. Natalie and Baron’s guess had been correct.

They were pushed out of the vehicleblindfolded and unable to seeled in a singlefile line by the masked men. Baron purposely walked a little slower so he could stay close to Natalie. Her breath carried that familiar trace of him, and she felt steadier for it.

They were herded into a warehouse. Hurry up! Don’t dawdle!one of the men barked, shoving Natalie. She stumbled and made a muffled sound.

Baron’s expression hardened. Don’t touch her!he barked.

Jensen couldn’t see what was happening outside, but he heard Natalie’s muffled grunt and then Baron’s low roar. He sneered through his own pain, Baron, you cowardnow you act like a hero?

Baron’s forceful presence startled the masked men. Hearing Jensen’s taunt, they flushed with shame and anger.

Do you know who you are to be shouting at us? You’ve got nerve!one of them snapped.
