Back then, he had doubted, but because the donation records came from Witch Doctor’s own files, Jensen buried his suspicions.
Now, faced with the scar carved into Natalie’s body, his world collapsed.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you keep it from me? Natalie, don’t you understand–if I’d known it was you who gave me that rib five years ago, I never would have married Sharon! We wouldn’t be where we are today!”
Natalie’s patience thinned at the sight of him unraveling.
“Jensen, stop acting like you’re the only victim here. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to weigh you down. I loved you for who you were, not because of some debt. I thought we would make it to the end together, so whether I told you or not–what difference would it have made? As for you, even without Sharon’s lies, you still would have married her. That whole story about paying back a debt–it was nothing but an excuse you made for yourself.”
Her words struck clean and sharp, no softness left. She paused, then went on.
“To you, I was the one who saved the Summers family, your benefactor. You always carried yourself like you were above me, like I should be grateful you even looked my way. I was quiet, I didn’t like chaos, so you thought I was sweet, obedient. That’s why for five years you treated me with that half–hearted warmth. But Jensen, in your bones, you’re restless. You crave danger, speed, Sharon–everything reckless. Don’t forget, even after we were together, you still went racing for her. Do you not remember how you ended up in that accident?”
Natalie’s voice was steady, almost indifferent now.
She had already let go.
Pain that carves to the bone eventually numbs.
Jensen froze, her words piercing deeper than any blade. He had never imagined she would speak to him like this.
“No, Natalie, it’s not like that! I only married Sharon because she came to me with that so- called life–saving debt!”
“If you say so. Sometimes lying to yourself is easier than facing the truth.”
Natalie dismissed him with a cool glance, unwilling to waste more breath.

“Why? Why are you so cold to me now? You risked your life for me! It was you who gave me your rib–why didn’t you tell me? If I’d known, I would have married you right away!”
“I never wanted to be married out of obligation
That was the line Jensen could never seem to understand.
Natalie was simple, pure in her love. She could give everything, even her life, for the man she loved. But once that love burned out, nothing–no scars, no sacrifices–could tie her back down
Jensen couldn’t see that
His tears slipped free as he choked out, “Natalie, how did you survive it? Hansel told me you looked terrible afterward. I thought the price you paid… I thought Witch Doctor had taken your body. That’s the wound that’s been killing me all these years. I loved you–how could I not? But believing that–that’s why I kept my distance. Do you understand? I kept telling myself you were ruined because of me. That I’d driven you into Witch Doctor’s hands. I hated myself for being so powerless. Can’t you see how it tore me apart?”
Natalie stared at him in shock.
“Five years ago… you thought I slept with Witch Doctor?”
The absurdity of it nearly made her laugh. She had given him her rib, nearly lost her life–and this was what he thought of her?
No wonder, when he learned she’d gone to Witch Doctor for him, he’d worn that cold, distant look. She’d assumed it was the lingering sickness in his body.
But all along, he had branded her as cheap.
She wanted to slap him across the face.
“So that’s what I am to you, Jensen? That’s who I’ve been in your heart all these years?”
Baron’s fury boiled over too.
He was Witch Doctor.
Not some degenerate who traded lives for a woman’s body.
That was an insult to his name, to his profession.

“What the hell do you know? She looked half–dead afterward and refused to tell me what Witch Doctor demanded. How could I not assume the worst? You’re a man too–if it had been you, wouldn’t your mind go there?”
