“Forget it. Just get him to the hospital,” she muttered.

But Baron had heard the plea for Witch Doctor, and though he understood why she’d said it- because she didn’t want to owe Jensen–something still pinched inside him. He knew Jensen had thrown himself in front of the blade to save her. He knew Natalie only wanted to repay that debt properly. He knew everything, and yet the thought of her asking for Witch Doctor still left him unsettled.

Then she took it back, saying not to trouble him, and the knot inside him loosened. She was still thinking of him. She didn’t want to make things harder for him. That was enough to soothe him.

“Don’t worry,” Baron said softly. “I’ll see that Witch Doctor treats him.”

“No,” Natalie shook her head quickly. “Just now I was confused. Jensen took that blade for me- it’s my debt, not yours. I won’t let you burn your connection to Witch Doctor on my behalf. Baron… I’m sorry.”

He brushed it off with a half–smile. “We’re husband and wife. Don’t apologize. I’ll take him. You stay. When the police come, they’ll want statements. It’ll be rough on you.”

Natalie nodded. “I know. Just… do your best.”

He gave her one last smile before turning away with Jensen in tow.

As the car carrying Baron and Jensen pulled out, Natalie’s knees wobbled. She stumbled back, nearly collapsing.

“Natalie!” Yvonne caught her quickly.

Only then did Yvonne see how pale she was. Blood had splattered across the hem of Natalie’s clothes–Jensen’s blood, a vivid, searing red.

“Sit, just for a moment,” Yvonne urged, guiding her onto a chair. “Westin has Anna in custody. When the police ask, you’ll say she escaped. She’s too important–we need to crack her first, find out who’s behind all this. For the rest, just stick to the facts.”

Yvonne’s voice was steady, but Natalie’s mind drifted. Again and again she saw Jensen throwing himself between her and the blade.

Yvonne blinked, startled by the order. She’d been talking about police reports, and suddenly Natalie was moving pieces like a strategist. But after a beat she nodded and moved to carry it

out.

The police arrived soon after. Because Natalie was the victim, she, Yvonne, and Westin were taken to the station for statements.

Across town, Loretta nearly collapsed when she heard Jensen had been poisoned.

“Who? Who dared touch someone from the Luke family?”

Her butler held her arm as she swayed. “Madam, calm yourself. They say Mr. Jensen is in critical condition. The doctors aren’t certain he’ll survive.”

Loretta clawed at his sleeve, her voice breaking. “What are you saying? Are the doctors at that hospital all useless? And what was he even doing at some warehouse in the suburbs?”

The butler had no answers.

Loretta staggered to her feet, about to rush out when another thought struck.

“Where’s Sharon? She may be his ex–wife, but Jensen treated her well. With him like this, she should be at the hospital. Send someone to fetch her. If Jensen… if anything happens, he mustn’t be left alone.”

The butler bowed his head. “At once, Madam. I’ll see Ms. Summers brought to him.”
