While the butler dialed, Loretta pulled out her phone and shot off a terse message.
“Rachel–if anything happens to my son, don’t blame me if we go to war.”
Across town, Rachel sat in her room, unaware of the chaos unfolding elsewhere. She had been waiting for Anna to bring good news–she wanted to watch Ruby and Waylon writhe–but instead her phone buzzed with Loretta’s threat.
That old hag–didn’t she tell Rachel to leave her alone? Rachel glanced around the room to be sure there were no cameras, then tapped back a bitter reply.
“Are you crazy? Why would I hurt your son? Don’t message me unless it’s important. If you want to die, fine–my life’s not over yet.”
She erased the text thread afterward and put her phone on silent.
Loretta read the reply and frowned. If Rachel wasn’t involved, then who had stabbed Jensen? Shareholders? Rivals? She couldn’t make sense of it, but she didn’t waste time. She ordered the car and left for the hospital at once.
When Sharon heard Jensen might not survive, panic closed around her. If Jensen died–what would become of her?
“Ms. Summers, the old madam’s car is waiting. Hurry and get to the hospital–Mr. Jensen’s condition is uncertain,” the butler urged. He’d seen Sharon dawdle long enough; the woman was cold and calculating, but even he noticed she looked pale and fragile now.
Sharon dressed slowly, every move measured, and followed the butler out. Loretta was already waiting in the car; Sharon hadn’t expected that and felt a prick of unease.
“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Sharon said in a small voice as she climbed in. She looked fragile, drained of color.
Loretta’s scowl softened for a moment. Memories of that doomed grandchild fluttered through her–if the pregnancy had been allowed to continue, she would have been a grandmother. The thought made her sigh despite herself.
“Let’s go.

We don’t know what’s happening at the hospital yet,” Loretta said. The others fell
Sharon sat stiffly, listening to the car hum. Finally she asked, “How was he hurt?”

“Someone stabbed him. The blade was poisoned. They’re trying to save him, but we don’t know if he’ll pull through.”
Loretta’s fingers tightened on the armrest. Then Lucy, the head butler, who’d just taken a call, leaned forward. “Madam–we’ve just heard that Mr. Jensen’s wife’s in–law asked Witch Doctor to operate. Word is the chance of success is pretty high.”
Loretta blinked. “Who said that?”
Sharon’s brow knitted. What did Natalie have to do with this?
Lucy didn’t wait for permission. “Apparently Mr. Jensen was stabbed protecting Ms. Stone. The dagger was meant for her–she’d been kidnapped. Mr. Jensen got involved at the scene and got caught in it. When they tried to kill Ms. Stone, he took the blow.”
Both Loretta and Sharon went pale.
“Nonsense!” Loretta slammed a hand on the armrest. “He’s only a man–why would he shield that woman? If he loved her so much, why didn’t he marry her in the first place?”
Sharon clenched her dress so tightly her knuckles blanched. Natalie–again Natalie. Why did Natalie keep entangling them all? Sharon had carried Jensen’s child and had been forced to terminate it; she’d been robbed and humiliated. And now Jensen would throw himself between a knife and that woman?
Sharon wanted to scream, to tear Natalie apart. Rage and a cold, bitter hurt boiled under her skin as the car sped toward the hospital.
