When Baron stepped out, his gaze swept the hall. No Natalie–only Westin giving him a subtle nod.
His mood soured instantly. She should have finished giving her statement by now. With her temperament, if Jensen had been stabbed in her place, she would never delay in coming to see him. Why were the police still holding her? Could they not grasp that she was the victim?
Baron’s brow furrowed.
Before he could dwell on it, Loretta’s anxious voice broke the air. He steeled himself to answer as the surgeon, when Sharon cut in with a simpering tone.
Baron’s face hardened at once.
“And what are you supposed to be?” His voice was cold, sharp. “You think you’re fit to speak to me? If you find this poison so easy to treat, why don’t you cure him yourself? Or is it that you’re suggesting if I can’t save him, I’m to blame?”
The words cracked like a whip.
Sharon hadn’t expected Witch Doctor to strike so mercilessly. Not even a trace of courtesy? She was a woman–wasn’t he supposed to show restraint?
Her eyes welled quickly with tears. “Witch Doctor, that’s not what I meant. I only meant… with your skill, no one but you could possibly save Mr. Jensen.”
She avoided using Jensen’s name now–divorced women had no right to intimacy.
Even Loretta found Sharon’s phrasing grating. “Enough! Silence!” she barked.
Sharon’s tears spilled. “Forgive me. I speak poorly. You won’t hold it against me, will you?”
་
“I will.” Baron’s voice sliced through her sobs. “I’m a man, not a god. Even the greatest physician cannot be asked to snatch back every soul from the underworld. I don’t care for flattery, but keep your cloying words to yourself. Say them again, and I’ll make certain you never open your mouth for the rest of your life.”
The flash of murder in his eyes sent a chill through the hall. The temperature seemed to drop, breath turning heavy.
Baron wasn’t merely a doctor–he was a godfather. Unmasked, his killing aura was suffocating.

Loretta, though seasoned, still felt her stomach turn. She’d heard tales of Witch Doctor’s foul temper; now she believed them. How Natalie had ever persuaded him five years ago remained
a mystery.
But Witch Doctor could not be offended. Loretta hurried forward, her face tight with forced courtesy. “Don’t be angry. She has no sense. I’ll have her removed.”
With a sharp gesture, she ordered Sharon dragged aside. Sharon wanted to protest, but one look into Baron’s glacial eyes froze her tongue. The killing intent alone was enough to convince her she had glimpsed death. Trembling, she let herself be pulled away.
Loretta leaned forward anxiously. “Witch Doctor, now… may I ask? How is my son?”
Baron’s gaze lingered on her. Natalie’s warning echoed in his mind–that this old woman had a hand in the baby–switch years ago. His tone sharpened.
“He’s alive. But the poison tore through his nervous system. When he wakes, he may suffer muscular weakness.”
Loretta’s eyes widened. “Muscular weakness? Will he recover?”
“The chances are slim. Not impossible, but slight. He should be grateful he still has his life.”
Baron turned on his heel, done with them.
For Natalie’s sake–for the life Jensen had shielded with his own body–Baron had been merciful. Jensen would live, though his left hand would never fully recover.
It was more than he deserved.
Years ago, when Natalie’s hand had been ruined by Sharon’s plotting, Jensen had not sought Witch Doctor’s help. He had let her suffer, even though he must have known what her hands meant to her as a designer.
Baron did not believe Jensen couldn’t have found him. Five years ago, powerless Natalie had managed to reach him through sheer determination. Jensen, president of Luke Corp, could have done the same–if he had wanted to.
But he hadn’t.
