The memory of Natalie’s despair, the helpless years when her right hand was nearly ruined, cut through Baron like a blade. The thought of her suffering still filled him with a rage he could barely contain. D
The woman he held at the center of his heart–how dared these people trample her?
He had restored her hand, yes, but that didn’t erase what had been done to her. Those debts remained.
Saving Jensen’s life was only to repay the debt Natalie carried. But crippling his left hand? That was justice.
Baron left the operating room, his lips curling in a faint, wicked smile. Behind the silver mask, his allure was sharp and dangerous–enough to snare Sharon’s heart in an instant.
She couldn’t take her eyes off him.
Baron felt the weight of her stare, and disgust coiled in his gut. With a flick of his wrist, a scalpel whistled through the air, slicing past Sharon’s temple and embedding deep into the wall behind her.
His voice dropped like ice. “Stare at me like that again, and I’ll
put
those eyes
out.”
The corridor froze. Silence thickened the air.
Loretta caught the lovestruck flicker in Sharon’s gaze and her face hardened like stone. Sharon -her son’s ex–wife, still under the Luke family’s roof–daring to lust after a doctor while Jensen’s life hung by a thread? It was shameful. It was an insult to the Luke name.
Whatever scraps of pity or tolerance Loretta had once held for Sharon dissolved in an instant.
Her voice cracked like a whip. “Sharon. Jensen may be divorced from you, but you were once a daughter–in–law of this family. He cared for you even after the separation. Now that he lies in need, you will step forward. If my son suffers because of neglect, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Sharon’s brows knitted tight. “Loretta, I’ve already divorced Mr. Jensen.”
“So what? As long as the Luke family does not release you, you belong here. You’re nothing more than our servant.”
The words hit harder than a slap.

“Servant? Old hag, have you lost your mind? I’m the Summers family’s eldest daughter! And you’d reduce me to a servant in your house?” Sharon’s voice was sharp, shrill with outrage.
Loretta’s palm cracked across her check. “What manners. Is this the Summers family’s teaching? To scream at your elders? Sharon, hear me well–your family isn’t what it once was, Even if it were, once you stepped through our doors, your fate lies in my hands. You failed to stand as mistress of this house. Then you’ll serve my son as a maid at his bedside. Do it well, and perhaps I’ll let you leave one day. Fail, and neither you nor your Summers family will know peace.”
She hadn’t intended to shackle Sharon to Jensen’s care. Sharon had once been a society daughter; Loretta would have spared her the indignity. But she’d seen the greedy glimmer in Sharon’s eyes when she looked at Witch Doctor. That alone changed everything.
She had witnessed the killing intent in Witch Doctor’s gaze. If Sharon provoked him further, Jensen’s fragile thread of life could snap.
No one could afford that. No one could risk offending Witch Doctor.
Sharon seethed, teeth grinding, but there was nothing she could do. Not now. Not with nothing to her name.
And if she stayed… perhaps Witch Doctor would return. If he came back, she would still have
her chance.
She lowered her head, swallowing her fury. “Fine. For old time’s sake, I’ll care for Mr. Jensen. But I won’t do it for free. You’ll me.”

“How much?” Loretta’s tone was like iron.
Inwardly, she sneered. How blind she had been to shield Sharon once, to pity her for the child she’d lost. The girl was nothing but a petty, grasping creature.
Not like Natalie.
Natalie had given Luke Corp five years of loyalty and brilliance, never taking a cent, helping her son stand tall in the company. Orphaned though she was, she carried more worth than any so–called heiress.
Compared to Natalie, Sharon was nothing but a hollow name.
And Loretta’s regret burned deep.
