Had she known sooner that Natalie was the Stone family’s daughter, Loretta would have forced Jensen to marry her no matter what. Then both the Stones‘ wealth and Witch Doctor’s connections would have belonged to the Luke family.
The regret twisted her insides until she could hardly breathe, and every glance at Sharon only deepened her loathing.
Sharon didn’t care what Loretta thought. She wasn’t going to be Luke Corp’s lady anymore, but she would not walk away empty–handed.
“Madam,” she said coldly, “I carried Jensen’s child once. It wasn’t my choice to lose it–it was him who wouldn’t let me keep it. Miscarriage ruins a woman’s body. I deserve compensation. And another thing–our marriage may have been mutual, but the divorce was forced on me. I want compensation for that too.”
Loretta’s face hardened. “Compensation? Don’t tell me you expect half the Luke fortune for a marriage that lasted mere days. Don’t be ridiculous. The Luke family doesn’t hand out charity, and our lawyers don’t lose.”
Sharon faltered. Yes, she had come hoping to grab for half of Luke Corp, but Loretta’s ferocity made her realize such greed could get her killed.
Her mind raced. “Fine. Don’t play games with me either. One hundred million. That’s all I want. Pay me that, and I’ll care for Jensen. I’ll even clean up after him if I have to. For Luke Corp, one hundred million is pocket change, isn’t it?”
Loretta laughed, a cold, cutting sound. “You? Worth a hundred million? Natalie made this

billions and never asked for a cent. You cost it billions and dare demand a hundred million more? Shouldn’t you be the one paying us back?”
The words struck Sharon silent.
“That wasn’t my fault!” she cried after a beat. “Natalie framed me at that café! I never betrayed Jensen!”
“Go shout that to the press,” Loretta snapped. “See if the shareholders believe you. None of that matters now. Ten million. Take it or leave it. Refuse, and I’ll see you regret the day you were born. Don’t doubt me, Sharon. I may be old, but I can still use a blade.”
Sharon blanched, fury roiling in her chest but no argument on her tongue.
A nurse’s exasperated voice broke in. “If you’re going to bicker over money, do it later. The

Her disbelief was plain. Jensen lay unconscious, fighting for his life, and here were his mother and ex–wife haggling over payouts in the corridor. Did either of them truly care whether he lived?
Loretta and Sharon fell quiet at last. Sharon backed away a step, but Loretta’s glare cut her like a knife.
“Lucy,” Loretta barked, “arrange the best suite for my
son.”
“Yes, madam,” the butler answered, hurrying to obey.
Jensen was wheeled into a VIP room. Still pale, still unconscious.
Sharon’s eyes burned with anger as she looked down at him. He had risked his life for Natalie without hesitation. But for her? Even pregnant, he had torn their child away.
Her hand strayed to her stomach, an ache where that life had once been. Yes, she had schemed to secure her place as Luke Corp’s mistress, but hadn’t she given enough?
Jensen was a bastard through and through. With Natalie, he had still longed for someone else. With her, he had still thrown himself in front of a knife for another woman.
Was it always the ones a man couldn’t have that kept him restless?
If she had known, she never would have married him at all.
But no matter. She had another path now. If she could attach herself to Witch Doctor, ten million would be nothing. For the moment, though, she would take what she could get.
