Sharon laughed loudly at the sight of Natalic. “I never thought you’d end up here too! Natalie, just wait – I’ll make you wish you were dead!”
Natalie stared at her in disbelief. They were both prisoners; a normal person would try to escape together. But Sharon’s glare made her meaning clear: Sharon intended harm, not cooperation.
“You’re an idiot,” Natalie said plainly. The words hit Sharon like a blow.
“An idiot? I ran myself ragged for Jensen for five years and what did I get? Played for a fool! How dare you call me an idiot! Natalie, I swear I’ll sell better than you. If some big shot takes a fancy to me, you’ll be finished. I’ll make you pay for everything – tenfold, a hundredfold. Just wait!”

Sharon had imagined clinging to Jensen’s gratitude forever. Even if she fell out with the Summers family, she thought she would never want for food or shelter. Instead, Jensen
and someone must learned the truth only after Natalie was taken and he rushed to help have told him. In Jensen’s mind, that someone could only have been Natalie. Sharon could not bear the idea of Natalie prospering; she would make her suffer.
Wounded and furious, Sharon gave up on escape. She returned to the overseer smiling, saying, “You said if I drew a big buyer, you’d give me a cut, right?”
The overseer was surprised. When Sharon first arrived she’d refused to stay and repeatedly tried to run; they had tortured her until she broke. The overseer had expected trouble, not cooperation. He glanced at Natalie and, even in the poor light, could see a face that would fetch a high price. This woman would be worth a lot at auction. He began to scheme.
Beth stepped in front of Natalie. “What are you doing? I warned you cause trouble.”

Sam snorted. “Don’t think your pretty cargo guarantees you the top price. My girl might not be pretty, but if she behaves, we could still make a fortune.” Sam looked at Sharon. “If you cooperate with me at the auction and don’t make things difficult, I might help you.”
Beth’s stomach dropped. Sharon smirked. “Fine. I’ll cooperate at the auction. But before that, I want to beat her up.”
“Are you crazy?” Beth exploded. Beth cared for her charges; she wouldn’t let another woman hurt them— especially not one assigned to someone else. Sam, however, did not refuse outright. Natalie was too beautiful; she would dominate the auction. The big buyers coming tonight would prize the top appearance, and Sam resented the idea that Beth might take the

largest commission. They had no choice in their cargo assignments. Sharon had been unlucky enough to be with Sam; Natalie had landed with Beth and seemed calm, even carrying an indefinable dignity. Such a captive would be snapped up instantly, and Beth’s commission would be large a thought that pricked Sam’s greed.
Seeing the look in Sam’s eyes, Beth knew trouble was coming. “Sam! Don’t be stupid. If you ruin her face, the boss won’t let you get away with it.”
Sam only shrugged. People who worked here were hardened, used to death and darkness. Money didn’t satisfy them; petty cruelties gave them a thrill. Now an opportunity had opened to humiliate Beth. Sam wasn’t going to miss it.
Beth’s face paled. She realized she had to protect Natalie and feared the consequences if she failed.
