Baron felt Natalie trembling in his arms and immediately realized she must’ve gone through something terrible.
To have survived in an environment like this until he arrived–and even managed to send out a message–wasn’t something Natalie could’ve done on her own. Could it be this woman’s doing?
Baron wasn’t the kind of man to feel much sympathy for others; but if this woman had saved his wife, then perhaps she deserved some consideration.
“Fine,” he said at last. “I’ll help her find her son–but she’d better be worth you speaking up for her.”
His gaze never left Beth.
Under the weight of his killing intent, Beth didn’t dare move a muscle. But when she heard what Baron said, she broke down in tears of relief.
“I am worth it! Really! I know a lot of inside information—and I know James might be involved in the kidnapping.”
“James?”
Baron didn’t know her story, so when he heard the name, he turned toward Natalie.
“We’ll talk about it later,” Natalie said quietly. “Can we just leave this place first? I don’t want to stay here another second.”
“All right.”
Baron called for his men.
When they climbed in through the window, Beth finally realized he hadn’t come alone. Seeing how skillfully they moved gave her a sliver of confidence.
Baron pointed at Beth. “Go with her to find her son. Ten minutes from now, I’ll have Westin pick you up. Whether you succeed or not, deliver this woman to Mr. Rio.”
Since Rio was here, it was best to hand everything over to the authorities.
His man nodded quickly.
Baron scooped Natalie into his arms. “Hold on to my neck; I’ll take you up the ladder.”

As he spoke, he called Westin.

Westin’s helicopter hadn’t landed yet. When he got Baron’s call, he immediately dropped the rope ladder.
Baron couldn’t afford to dive back into the water with Natalie; that would be too risky.
He glanced at the sealed cabin door and understood what needed to be done.
“Westin, cover me from above.”
He stripped off his bulletproof vest and pulled it onto Natalie instead.
She froze for a moment, then started to struggle. “No–you need it more than I do.”
“Wear it,” he said firmly. “I’ll feel better if you do.”
His tone left no room for
argument.
Natalie’s throat tightened painfully.
This man was literally putting his life on the line to protect her.
She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. “Baron,” she whispered, her voice steady despite the trembling, “as long as you don’t cheat, I’ll be your wife for the rest of my life.”
Baron’s lips curved in a faint smile.
“I’ll remember that. Don’t worry–this life, you’ll only ever be mine.”
Then he sent Westin a message.
Moments later, the sound of bodies hitting the floor echoed from outside.
Baron’s man immediately grabbed Beth, shielding her behind him as he and Baron kicked the cabin door open.
The black–clad guards outside were hit by arrows raining down from Westin’s helicopter.
The arrowheads were laced with tranquilizers.
They tried to shout, to fight–but within seconds, they collapsed unconscious.
The drug was one of Baron’s own creations, and its effect was potent.

Natalie and Beth stared at the fallen guards in disbelief; moments ago, those men had seemed invincible, and now they lay sprawled across the doorway.
Baron shot his man a look, then climbed the ladder with Natalie in his arms.
Everyone here was trained and ruthless; once they realized what was happening, they’d come running.
Baron might’ve been strong, but not even he dared take unnecessary risks while carrying Natalie.
For Natalie, it was the most intense experience of her life.
She had braced herself for blood and chaos–told herself not to scream, not to panic–but when she saw Baron using a crossbow instead, she couldn’t help feeling a rush of relief.
As Baron climbed swiftly up the rope ladder, the roar of wind and waves filled her ears. But all she could see was him.
She suddenly remembered something she’d once read about knowing when love was real. Back then, it sounded like something out of a storybook, but now she understood–it wasn’t just words. The feeling hit her deep in her chest, a kind of happiness she’d never known before.
Five years ago, when Jensen had rescued her, broken and scarred, she’d thought he was her knight in shining armor. But in the end, she’d almost died in a fire because of him.
Five
years later, Baron came for her, fighting his way back into her life to save her. This time, she prayed she wouldn’t be let down again–that she hadn’t chosen the wrong man.
