Natalie buried her face against Baron’s chest, listening to his heartbeat like a war drum and feeling the heat radiating from him; the panic and fear of the past two days vanished in that
moment.
A smile hovered at the corner of her mouth as she fainted. Baron felt her movement and hesitated for a beat, then felt a small surge of happiness at Natalie’s dependence; but before he could savor it, a silenced bullet suddenly came flying toward them!
It was too late for Baron to dodge, and if he moved out of the way, Natalie would be the one hit.
At the last second, Baron clamped onto Natalie’s slim waist and twisted her away; warm blood sprayed across Natalie’s face.
“Baron!”
Because of what had happened with Sam before, Natalie was no stranger to the smell of blood; now that stinging scent and the warm splash against her skin froze her solid.
“Where are you hurt? Let go of me! Don’t worry about me, Baron!”
Natalie knew they were on the rope ladder; there was nowhere for Baron to dodge.
If I hadn’t been this burden, he wouldn’t have been hurt! It’s my fault Baron got hurt! she thought; Natalie had never felt helpless before, but in that instant she knew her own ineptitude and the weight she’d become.
When she had lain unconscious in the hospital bed, she’d only heard from Yvonne that Baron had fainted several times for her sake; she had never seen it with her own eyes.
Now, with such a shocking, vivid scene splashing across her face–hot and dazzling—Natalie felt as if her chest were being torn open.
She had always known Baron would risk his life for her; yet she had never witnessed a sight so blinding and terrifying.
Whose life isn’t a life? Baron heard the tremor and pain in Natalie’s voice; he could even sense her inner struggle.
This woman really wanted to jump off here, to buy me a sliver of time. How could she be so foolish? As foolish as when she was a teenager! He thought.

Baron held her waist tighter, his voice raw as he said, “If you keep struggling, we’ll both die. Babe, I’m hurt; I don’t have the strength to hold you. If you insist on jumping, I’ll go with you -I don’t have the strength left anyway.”
After he said that, the grip Baron had on the ladder loosened a little.
Natalie could have let go of her own life, but when she heard Baron say he would die with her, she grabbed his arm tightly and cried, “Don’t jump! I don’t want you to die.”
“Stupid wife!”
Baron sighed, then quickly gathered her into his arms and started climbing up.
Westin saw Baron was injured and his eyes
reddened.
“Damn it! They actually dared to hurt Mr. Baron! Kill them!”
Because Rio was on the plane, Westin had been holding back.
He could tell Baron didn’t want his godfather’s identity revealed to Rio, so he’d been cooperating–whether it was this rescue or Baron asking him to protect Rio, he’d played by the rules; but this moment was different.
Baron had been shot! And Natalie seemed to be in mortal danger!
Rio, for his part, was still on the phone; the people he’d brought only held their guns without making a move.
Westin felt that if he didn’t act now, Mr. Baron might later toss him into the sea to feed the fish.
At Westin’s command, everyone Baron had brought drew their guns and chambered rounds.
Rio froze.
“Mr. Rio, what are you going to do?”
“Mr. Rio, can’t you see? Mr. Baron was shot! The other side clearly intends to kill Mr. Baron and his wife; you can stand by and watch, but we can’t! Brothers, finish them off!”
At Westin’s order, the people around them sprang into action.
A dense fusillade of gunfire erupted and exchanged with those on the ship. Rio never expected Westin’s people to be so fierce; he was surprised the Stone family even had guns. Is that allowed?

“Mr. Rio, Brian sent us to rescue Ms. Stone; she’s down there now. If we don’t fire, it won’t look good; besides, they shot first, so we’re just defending ourselves. This is a no–man’s–land; everything we do is to save her.”
It was Rio’s first time through something like this, and he was uneasy; but hearing the man’s words, he understood a little.
“All right, return fire!”
With Rio’s order, the others opened fire; a fierce gun battle ignited immediately.
