When the man finished speaking, he waved his hand sharply. At once, several men in black stepped forward, tied Waylon and Flynn together, and began beating them again.
They both gritted their teeth through the pain without a sound; sweat seeped from their foreheads. Waylon was hunched over, clearly struggling.
“Dad! Are you okay? Dad!”
Flynn was terrified.
Waylon clenched his jaw and said, “I’m fine. Baron will hear about this sooner or later; even if something happens to us, he’ll make sure the Stone family gets justice. I only regret dragging you into this, Flynn.”
Flynn shook his head. “Being a son of the Stone family is something I’m proud of.”
“Good boy.”
Waylon’s eyes grew misty.
Just as he thought he and Flynn were about to die here, a sudden explosion thundered outside; the whole floor shuddered.
“What the hell was that?”
The man staggered slightly, his face turning dark as his voice cracked.
The men in black looked confused; they rushed out to investigate, but the moment they stepped outside, several tear gas canisters were hurled toward them.
“Boss, it’s tear gas!”
The men scrambled back and slammed the living room door shut.
Thick smoke spread outside, blurring everything.
The man frowned.
“Could it be The Official? Impossible–Payne’s been reassigned. No one else would think to come here to the Stone family’s estate. Then who the hell is out there?”
None of his men had an answer.

Waylon and Flynn exchanged bewildered glances.
“Dad, did you arrange this?”
Waylon shook his head quickly.

“Do I look like I keep tear gas on hand? We’re legitimate businessmen, not mercenaries.”
Flynn wanted to rub his nose at that, only to remember his hands were tied.
As everyone’s attention stayed on the chaos outside, a small figure climbed in through the balcony window.
It was Susie—the girl everyone thought had gone missing.
To avoid making noise, she had taken off her shoes and moved barefoot, darting behind Waylon and Flynn to untie them.
Waylon was the first to sense something; after all, those tiny hands were far too soft and delicate.
He turned suddenly and locked eyes with Susie.
She didn’t flinch; if anything, her calm startled him even more.
He wanted to speak, but the fear of exposing her froze him in place; sweat streamed down his temples.
Susie, afraid her grandfather would ruin everything, pressed a finger to her lips, signaling him to stay quiet.
Flynn saw her too, his eyes widening in disbelief. Oh, God–why did she have to come back now?
He wanted nothing more than to kick her right back out the window.
But Susie, seemingly unbothered, finished untying them and pulled two syringes from her small backpack.
Waylon and Flynn had no idea what she planned to do–they just hoped she’d get out of there. Then they saw her draw some kind of liquid into the syringes, one in each hand, and—before they could react–plunged them into the necks of two nearby guards.
The men in black jerked from the sting, trying to shout, but their bodies went rigid; both collapsed soundlessly to the ground.

Susie quickly motioned for Waylon and Flynn to catch them before they fell, keeping them from making noise.
When she was sure no one had noticed, she tugged on their sleeves, urging them to follow her.
Waylon and Flynn didn’t hesitate.
Without Susie, they would have been dead already; but with her there, they couldn’t risk her safety for anything.
The three of them crept toward the balcony and climbed out.
Waylon had assumed Susie came alone, maybe with Sean at best. But as soon as he stepped outside, he saw Payne waiting with a team ready to escort them.
“Mr. Waylon, I’m sorry you were frightened.”
“Let’s move!”
Waylon understood immediately–The Official had taken over.
He grabbed Susie and Flynn’s hands and rushed them into the car.
“Susie, where’s
your brother?”
Finally seeing her again but not Sean, his heart thudded uneasily; he couldn’t calm the dread twisting inside him.
