Baron’s thoughts darkened. From what Rachel had just said, it was clear she had something to do with Natalie being switched at birth more than twenty years ago. Thinking of everything Natalie had suffered through the years, he no longer felt the need to hide who he was. His grip on Rachel’s throat tightened.
Rachel felt death closing in; she clawed and struggled, but it was useless. For the first time, she felt how close death could be. Am I really going to die here today? Despair clawed at her chest.
Just as she thought she was done for, Baron suddenly flung her aside and took the handkerchief Shauna handed him, wiping his hand with calm precision.
With a single look from Shauna, the others stepped forward and restrained Rachel.
Gasping for air, Rachel’s wide eyes still burned with disbelief.
“How could you be the Godfather? The Godfather of Murica–how could someone like you willingly marry into the Stone family as a live–in son–in–law?”
She couldn’t make sense of it. A man like him–a legend, feared and untouchable–should’ve been aloof, proud, above it all. How could he have chosen to become the Stone family’s subordinate?
Baron didn’t seem bothered in the least.
He said coldly, “How could a sparrow ever understand the ambition of a swan? I hadn’t planned to touch you, but you laid a hand on my wife. Shauna–give her fifty slaps, then take her away for interrogation. I want to know who’s behind her, and I want the truth about why my wife was switched at birth more than twenty years ago.”
“Yes, Mr. Baron.”
Shauna’s voice was firm and respectful.
Only now did Rachel realize that Baron didn’t mean “son–in–law.”
She had been a fool.
Before she could even think to beg for mercy, Shauna’s hand cracked across her face.
Baron’s gaze shifted to Natalie’s cheeks, still marked with red prints. His eyes grew darker, colder, murderous.

Whether Rachel heard him or not, he didn’t care; his voice was steady and low. “From the moment we landed in Meridia, I knew something would happen. Ocean City was sealed off, no one could get in or out, so of course someone would take the opportunity to strike. That’s why I deliberately left an opening for you.”
He glanced at Rachel, whose tears streamed down her swollen face, and let out a cold laugh.
“You really thought tracing my flight logs would be that easy? If I hadn’t leaked them myself, you could’ve searched until your last breath and still never found me. And the takeout–come on. With my men everywhere and the situation what it is, you think I’d be dumb enough to let outsiders handle our food? No, that was bait. I wanted to see who’d take it, who’d crawl out of the dark. Turns out it wasn’t anyone worth the trouble–just you, a nobody. Still, I suppose it’s fine. It’s been a long time since I’ve had blood on my hands. Marriage softened me. But when you laid a finger on my wife, you gave me reason enough to remember what I used to be.”
He waved his hand dismissively.
By then, Shauna had already finished delivering all fifty slaps.
Rachel’s face was grotesquely swollen, unrecognizable; her skin burned and tingled so much she could barely feel it anymore.
When she learned Baron was the Godfather, she’d known she was finished. But hearing his words now filled her eyes
with
pure despair.
She tried to bite down hard–to end things herself–but Shauna caught her jaw and dislocated it with a snap.
A hidden poison capsule rolled from Rachel’s mouth, which Shauna swiftly plucked away.
Baron only watched, expressionless.
“Take her away,” he ordered coolly. “I want answers. Until I get them, she’s not allowed to die.”
“Yes, sir.”
Shauna dragged Rachel off like a dead dog.
The room was quickly cleaned.
Baron opened the window to let the smell of blood dissipate; he didn’t want Natalie waking up
to it.
Then he glanced at the phone floating in water and sighed helplessly.

If he hadn’t been worried about alerting the enemy, he never would’ve ignored the calls–nor let Rachel toss his phone into the water.
The thought made his chest tighten.
“Tell Shauna,” he said toward the door, “to use Rachel’s money to buy me a new phone.”
A guard hurried off to relay the message.
Baron turned back toward the bed, his eyes softening at the sight of Natalie still unconscious.
“My love, how much longer are you going to sleep?” he murmured.
The red marks on her cheeks stung his eyes. He went to the kitchen, boiled a few eggs, peeled them, and gently rolled them across her face.
That was when Natalie stirred.
Her eyes flew open, meeting Baron’s anxious, expectant face.
For a second she froze, her mind still hazy; then she felt the warmth of something smooth rolling against her skin.
