Baron quickly took the dagger from Natalie’s hand and tossed it to Shauna before speaking gently. “Natalie, don’t get worked up; you’re still recovering. It’s my fault–I shouldn’t have let him in and disturb your rest.”

Jensen nearly lost it.

“Baron, can you stop pretending? You didn’t hold back at all just now! These bruises–aren’t they your handiwork?”

Natalie rubbed her temples, looking from the raving Jensen to Baron’s worried face.

“Enough, Jensen! You stormed in here looking for trouble–what, you didn’t think getting hit was the natural consequence? What are you complaining about now? Look at Baron! He’s bleeding from the chest; how does your little bruise compare to that?”

Jensen stared at her, utterly incredulous; even his voice cracked.

Jensen stood frozen, listening to their exchange.

He knew his place in Natalie’s heart had fallen, but not this low.

“Natalie, don’t let him fool you! Baron’s a manipulative snake!”

Natalie’s chest rose and fell sharply.

“Shauna, what are you waiting for? Get him out!”

Shauna stepped in front of Jensen and said coolly, “Mr. Jensen, please. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

Jensen tried to rush forward again, but Shauna twisted his arm sharply.

The searing pain made sweat break out across his forehead.

“Do you even know who I am? How dare you treat me like this?”

With that, she dragged him toward the door.

Out of the corner of his eye, Jensen saw Natalie carefully supporting Baron; Baron leaned heavily against her, and she didn’t seem to mind–if anything, she looked heartbreakingly tender.

The sight was painfully familiar–so familiar that Jensen’s eyes reddened.
