Natalie’s mind raced, but Yvonne’s next words stopped her cold.

“It really was Loretta! I’m sure of it! That old woman gave you a hard time before; I remember her face clearly!”

Yvonne’s voice quickened, as if afraid Natalie wouldn’t believe her.

Worried the topic might upset her sister’s wounds, Natalie quickly said, “Okay, I understand. Don’t get worked up; take time and tell me everything.”

“When I saw that old woman, I remembered she might’ve had something to do with the mix- up from twenty years ago. So I went up to ask if she was the one who made that strange phone call, and what her purpose was in bringing me here. At that point, Yvonne looked frustrated.

“What happened after that?”

“When I came to, I was trapped in a basement. There was someone else down there–a young man named Alden. I didn’t know who he was at first, only that he’d been beaten so badly he was barely hanging on, his wounds already starting to fester. I searched my pockets and found a bit of emergency medicine, so I cleaned him up and treated what I could. didn’t even know my father’s name back then, so I told him no–but he wouldn’t believe me. He kept insisting I was the daughter of the Stone family’s second son. That’s when it hit me- he was talking about my dad.”

Yvonne went on to describe how she had met Alden and how he recognized her.

Ruby and Flynn stayed quiet in the back, listening without interruption.

Natalie glanced at Ruby. “Mom, does Yvonne look like Uncle Xenon?”

“She does! She looks almost identical to your uncle when he was young.”

Ruby had met her brother–in–law before.

Hearing that, Yvonne’s eyes grew red.

“Aunt Ruby, what kind of person was my dad?”

She knew very little about her parents. And since she had once believed that Xenon had been involved in Natalie’s disappearance, guilt had kept her from ever asking.

Now that she finally knew her parents hadn’t been bad people, she couldn’t hold back her curiosity any longer.

Ruby thought for a moment, her voice softening. “Your father was a scholar. He never cared much for business; he loved studying and learning. So when he decided to become a teacher, Waylon didn’t object—after all, not everyone in the Stone family had to go into business. Your mother was a teacher too; she taught history. The two of them fell in love at school, and later they got married. Afterward, they were very happy together. When you were born, your father was so overjoyed that he threw a three–day celebration; your mother adored you as well.”

Ruby paused, then continued, “But one day, out of the blue, your father came home and said he’d quit his job–he wanted to join the company and learn the trade. Waylon thought it was strange and asked why he’d made such a sudden decision. He said that with a child now, the modest salaries he and your mom earned weren’t enough to give you a better life. But Waylon had been giving your father annual dividends all along.”

Ruby’s brow furrowed slightly, as if she were recalling something.

“Right–your father made that decision after coming back from an overseas training program. Waylon didn’t think much of it at first. He figured your dad must’ve run into some problems at work, so he let it go. But then your father insisted on starting out as general manager right away. Waylon told him he needed to work his way up like everyone else, and the two of them had a terrible fight over it. After that, your parents moved out and started living on their own.”

Ruby sighed, lost in the memory. “Your father and Waylon were always close. When their parents passed away, they swore they’d never fight–no matter what. But that night… it was horrible.
