When the Dead Still Call novel Chapter 416

**Chapter 416: Broken Bond**

In the tangled web of her family ties, Amelia felt as though she was surrounded by ghosts. Everyone had faded from her life, leaving only her grandmother and her aunt as the remnants of what once was. The rest? They were mere shadows, mere memories that haunted her thoughts but no longer held any warmth.

Marcelo, she mused, was no exception to this rule. Why should he be any different?

His so-called promise to assist her in dealing with Gianna was nothing short of a cruel joke. She could hardly suppress a laugh at the thought. Gianna had ensnared him in her web of manipulation, turning him into a mere puppet dancing to her whims. All he craved was revenge—a pathetic attempt to reclaim his shattered pride.

He wasn’t coming to her aid; he was simply seeking to harness her strength to fulfill his own vendetta.

Amelia had reached a conclusion. If she ever wished to bring Gianna down, she would do it on her own terms. She had the capability, the will, and most importantly, the drive. The Jordan family did not instill fear in her heart, so why should she tremble before a woman like Gianna?

“So that’s how it is? You truly don’t care about family at all? You won’t even consider it?” Marcelo’s voice was laced with disbelief, as if he couldn’t comprehend her indifference.

“If this is about the heir position,” he added hastily, a hint of desperation creeping into his tone, “you can relax. I’m not vying for it.” He believed that her refusal stemmed from a fear of losing the heirship to him. In his mind, if they could reach some sort of truce, she would cease viewing him as a rival. Perhaps she might even assist him in climbing the ranks more swiftly than before.

Yet, once again, Marcelo was mistaken.

“I’ve made it abundantly clear. I’ve severed all ties with the Nygards. From this point forward, you forge your own path, and I’ll carve mine. If you keep your distance, I won’t trouble you.” Her voice was an icy blade, sharp and unforgiving, her gaze penetrating him like a spear.

Did they truly think her declaration of severing ties was merely a product of her anger?

“And as for the heir position,” she continued, her lips curling into a disdainful sneer, “if I ever wanted it, I would seize it for myself. And even if I didn’t, I certainly don’t need you to hand it to me as if it were some kind of trophy.”

Her tone dripped with haughty arrogance. Each word was a challenge, daring him to respond.

But she had every right to be proud. She possessed the strength to back every statement she made.

With a flick of her gaze, her patience evaporated. “Can you leave now? I have things to attend to.”

That was her final ultimatum. No matter how many apologies or sweet words he concocted, she was resolute in her decision to ignore him.

Marcelo’s expression tightened, the muscles in his jaw clenching as her indifference pierced through him. He longed to argue, to defend himself, but her calm, frigid demeanor shattered his pride into a million pieces.

He had never found himself in such a low position before—not even for Isabel, the woman he once professed to love with all his heart.

In the end, he bit down hard on his jaw and turned his back on her, striding out of her office in silence, the weight of his defeat heavy on his shoulders.
