Henrietta clicked on his profile and saw that the few public posts were all about work, his company, and global financial trends. There was nothing personal at all.
Returning to the chat window, she saw he hadn't sent a message. After a moment's thought, she decided to start the conversation.
[Thanks for your help the other day.]
She was never good at small talk, especially forced conversations like this, so she used their last encounter as an opener. She assumed he wouldn't reply immediately, but to her surprise, a voice message popped up instantly.
It was only a second long. She played it, and a man's crisp, cool voice filled the silence with a single word. "Welcome."
Henrietta raised an eyebrow and rolled over. The topic was a dead end. Now what? Should she try again?
She typed out a few words: [Are you overseas?] After hesitating for a few seconds, she sent it.
A moment later, her phone lit up. Yosef had replied with another single word: [Yes.]
There was a time difference, but since he hadn't specified which country, she didn't know what time it was for him. They weren't close enough for her to ask. She racked her brain for another topic.
[Oh, and thank you for the birthday gift. It's beautiful, I really love it.]
She hadn't had a chance to thank him for the present, so now seemed like a good time.
This time, however, there was no immediate reply. Henrietta waited for a while, figuring he must be busy. Seeing how late it was, she decided to go to sleep. She placed her phone on the nightstand, but the screen suddenly lit up again.
She picked it up. It was a message from Yosef. [Glad you like it.]
Henrietta ran a hand through her hair. Well, that was another dead end. She really was terrible at this.
Out of politeness, she sent a simple sticker in reply. She turned off her phone, ready for sleep, when it suddenly started ringing. She glanced at the screen and sat bolt upright. Yosef was video calling her!
