Callie, however, was already used to his cold demeanor. "I knew it! You agreed!" she chirped, nodding to herself. "Don't worry, as long as you don't push me away, I won't say a single word about your secret!" She took a couple of quick steps and linked her arm through Gilbert's again, looking up at his handsome profile, her heart soaring with delight. He was just so gorgeous.
"Gilbert," she cooed, smiling brightly. "I really, really like you!"
Gilbert paused, glancing down at her. "Is that so?" he asked, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Weren't you all over that foreign male model last month? And the month before that... it was that rising young star, wasn't it?" He didn't need to investigate Callie's affairs; her romantic history was legendary, always targeting the best-looking men with the best bodies in the entertainment industry.
"Oh, come on!" Callie blushed, slightly embarrassed at being called out. "That was only because you were ignoring me!" She gave his arm a playful pat. "Besides, that was all before us. Surely, Mr. Harrison isn't the type to get jealous over ancient history?" She raised her right hand in a mock oath. "I promise, now that I'm with you, I'll be completely devoted..." she said, leaning a little closer to him. "None of my ex-boyfriends can compare to you. You're different."
Gilbert scoffed silently. Did she really think he'd believe such nonsense? And even if it were true, did she think he cared?
"So..." Callie leaned in closer, whispering, "What kind of illness do you have? I heard you and Charles talking... it sounded pretty serious."
"Shut up!" Gilbert's brow furrowed as he snapped. "Ask me one more time, and I'll send you packing!"
"Okay..." Callie pouted. "Fine, I won't ask. So mean." Trapped with her clinging to his arm, Gilbert was endlessly irritated, his frown never once easing. It seemed that when it rains, it pours. Of all the people to run into, why did it have to be her?
...
The sky was just beginning to lighten. After Nanson's IV drip finished, Sherilyn accompanied him back to the hotel, seeing him all the way to his room. "Nanson, get some good rest," she urged. "Call me anytime if you feel unwell."
