The phone rang for a long time. Just before it went to voicemail, Sherilyn answered. A familiar, deep male voice came through, tinged with apology and a hint of pleading. "Sherilyn, are you asleep?"

Sherilyn paused. Was that really his business to ask? "Gilbert..." she said, her voice laced with impatience, "was everything I said to you the other night for nothing?"

"No..." Hearing her tone, Gilbert panicked. "I'm not trying to bother you... I'm sorry, I... I just have a question..."

"Oh?" Sherilyn scoffed, certain he was just making an excuse. "What is it?"

"It's... I just took my medicine, and I'm out of the dried apricots," Gilbert said quickly. "You always used to buy them, and the maids don't know where to get them. I... I don't like candy, so I just wanted to ask you..." His voice grew quieter as he spoke. "I'm sorry for disturbing you."

Sherilyn was silent for a moment. She hadn't expected it to be about something so trivial. A question popped into her head, and she asked without thinking, "You're eating candy now?"

Shouldn't he be at Mount Serenity, or at least on his way there?

"Yeah..." Gilbert replied wearily. "Just took my medicine."

Sherilyn let out a long, quiet breath, running her slender fingers through her hair. "Sherilyn?" Gilbert sensed something and asked tentatively, "Did you think... I went to Mount Serenity?"

It wasn't what she thought; it was what should have happened. Francis had said Caroline's leg was in severe pain.

"I didn't go," Gilbert said plainly. "It's enough that Francis is there." They had discussed it when they parted ways. Francis would call him if he was needed for anything. He knew it would be difficult to ask his brother to personally attend to Caroline's every need now.
