Wife You Discarded is a Billionaire's Crush novel Chapter 11

Liliana had braced herself for being told her skills were rusty, but to be dismissed for such superficial reasons felt deeply unfair. That information was on her resume; why invite her for an interview at all?

"Our company has its policies," the interviewer said, standing up. "You're married with no children. For all we know, you could get pregnant right after being hired. We can't afford to pay for maternity leave and train a replacement. We're not running a charity." He gestured for his assistant to show her out.

Liliana told herself it was just bad luck. But the same thing happened at the second and third companies. The fourth and fifth were even worse; the receptionist simply told her the position had already been filled.

Her initial burst of confidence evaporated.

That evening, she returned to Juniper's apartment to the smell of a celebratory dinner. Juniper danced into the foyer holding a small chocolate cake.

"To Liliana, future star designer! May that jerk Forrest live to regret the day he lost you!"

Liliana's shoulders slumped. "You can put the cake away, Junie. I didn't get any offers."

"What? How is that possible?" Juniper exclaimed. "You're a top graduate from a prestigious university! You've won awards! Who cares if you don't have experience? Any company would be blind not to see your potential."

"Maybe it's just not the right time," Liliana said, forcing a smile as she sat down at the table. "I have two more interviews on Monday. These things take time."

But as she spoke, she couldn't help but picture Sylvia, who was her age and already the VP of a major corporation. The feeling of failure was crushing.

"Which companies are they?" Juniper asked casually, her eyes sharp as she went to retrieve the cake anyway.

"Tranquil Solutions and Cyan," Liliana replied. They were two of the biggest firms in Riverbend City. After today's string of rejections, her hopes were slim.

"Don't even mention that bastard's name!" Juniper fumed. "She's divorcing him."

"Divorcing him? Why—"

"Just tell me if you can do it or not!"

There was a pause. "I got it," Douglas said, his tone suddenly serious, and then he hung up.

"Got what?" Juniper muttered to the dead line, utterly confused.
