Cedric caught her delicate, soft hand, his thumb gently caressing the back of it.
"What is it?"
"I want to buy another car. It's inconvenient for work." Liliana's eyes shone as she stated her request.
Suddenly, Cedric's pupils contracted. The softness in his gaze sharpened. He studied her. She seemed to have changed, yet tonight she was acting just like her old self. But her old self had never asked him for anything. The car she had wrecked—he had been the one to suggest buying it for her because he was tired of her always needing a ride.
"Fine," Cedric said, not refusing. "Take my card… or if you have time this weekend, I'll go with you. Pick out whatever you like, and I'll buy it for you."
Liliana was taken aback. She had expected him to just hand over a credit card, as he usually did. But he was offering to go with her.
After a moment, she said, "You don't have to go to the trouble. I'll just get the same model as before. I'm used to it."
"If you're used to it, then you should upgrade to something more expensive. Something that befits the status of Mrs. Forrest," Cedric said, raising her hand to his lips and placing a light kiss on her knuckles. His eyes never left her face.
Liliana's eyes held a hint of a spark, a subtle allure. She smiled. "It's not good to be too flashy at work."
"Then don't work." The only reason he hadn't objected to her job was because he knew she was down about Hale. Now, remembering she was working at Douglas's company, he was starting to regret his decision.
Liliana didn't give him a chance to take it back. "Alright, then. You can take me shopping this weekend for something worthy of Mrs. Forrest."
Only three more days until the weekend. Once she had a car, she wouldn't have to endure this ordeal. But those three days felt like an eternity.
Cedric, having been denied for so long, was insatiable. He took her almost every night, leaving Liliana completely drained. The day before, she had summoned a sliver of energy to put on an act when he got home. Now, she was too exhausted to even bother.
Cedric, on the other hand, was in high spirits. It was only after a few days that he finally noticed something was wrong.
It was a distance, a coldness.
Except for the one night she had asked for the car, when she had played the doting wife, she had reverted to the same detached behavior from the night she first returned.
