For the two years Liliana had been married to Cedric, her father, Chuck, had shamelessly leveraged the connection for personal gain.
Liliana knew nothing about the business world, so Chuck had started contacting Cedric directly. At first, Cedric had humored him, but as Chuck's demands grew more incessant, he had passed the responsibility to Timothy to deal with.
Timothy had handled all matters related to the Preston family since then, providing assistance whenever it was beneficial. What started as purely professional dealings gradually bled into personal favors. When Timothy had asked for guidance, Cedric had simply told him to handle it all as he saw fit—help where he could, but don't go out of his way.
So, when Chuck had called about needing a lawyer, Timothy had arranged it without a second thought.
He had completely forgotten that Liliana and Cedric were in the middle of a divorce. Every word of their confrontation just now had sent shockwaves of terror through him. He had tried to interrupt, to clarify, but neither of them had given him the chance!
"Give me the phone," Cedric ordered, holding out his hand to Timothy.
Liliana's heart leaped into her throat. She instinctively grabbed his wrist with both hands. "Cedric—"
His gaze was unyielding, her grip utterly useless against his strength. Timothy didn't dare disobey. He quickly unlocked his phone and handed it over.
*Bang—*
The office door was thrown open again. Someone rushed in. "Mr. Forrest, something's happened to Ms. Woods! You have to come quickly!"
The loud noise made Liliana flinch, and she instinctively pressed closer to Cedric. But in the next second, he shoved her away. Her hip slammed into the sharp corner of the desk, and a jolt of pain made her gasp, cold sweat beading on her forehead.
Cedric had already dropped Timothy's phone and was striding toward the door, his face etched with worry. "What happened to Sylvia?"
His voice, sharp with anxiety, faded as he disappeared from the office.
By the time Liliana recovered, he was gone. He had left in such a hurry; he wouldn't have time to contact Attorney Chase. As long as she got to the firm first and signed the retainer agreement, Attorney Chase would be obligated to take Hale's case.
Liliana didn't dare say for certain that she had secured the top lawyer. She didn't know if she could get there before Cedric intervened.
Seeing Vida's red-rimmed eyes and haggard face, she was about to offer a few words of comfort when Vida interrupted her. "Here's a copy. Take it and go!"
The evidence was a dashcam recording that had captured the entire incident. Vida shoved it into Liliana's hands and pushed her toward the door. "Call me as soon as you have an update!"
The doorway was narrow, and Liliana, caught off guard by the push, slammed her arm into the frame with a dull thud. She winced, clutching her elbow.
Vida glanced at her arm, then looked out into the yard. "Where's your car?"
"I… I was in a hurry, so I took a taxi." Liliana's brow furrowed in pain.
