The morning sun flooded the room with a blinding golden light. Cedric watched the woman on the bed, his voice thick with concern.
"Work isn't important."
*Sylvia is more important than work.*
Liliana's hands, resting in her lap, clenched into tight fists, her knuckles turning white. The color drained from her face, her already pale complexion becoming even more haggard.
Juniper was about to say something, but Liliana quickly grabbed her hand and shook her head.
"Let's go."
She wasn't good with words, and she couldn't move easily. If Juniper made a scene, Cedric might take it out on the Sewell family. Besides, he had only been here with Sylvia for a medical issue. That was far better than what she had imagined them doing last night, wasn't it?
Juniper seethed, her eyes fixed on the couple in the room. Sylvia unwrapped the bandage, revealing a slightly red wrist, and rotated it to show it was fine.
"See? I'm perfectly okay." She got out of bed, walked over to Cedric, and tugged on his sleeve. "Please let me go home. I really hate hospitals."
Cedric took her wrist, examining it carefully before finally relenting with a sigh. "Alright."
A bright smile lit up Sylvia's face. She looped her arm through his and started walking out of the room. They had only taken a few steps when they both froze.
Their eyes met Liliana's in the hallway.
When Juniper had refused to leave, Liliana should have urged her away. But for some reason, her gaze had been locked on Cedric, on their intimate gestures, and she couldn't find her voice. Now, her cool, indifferent eyes met his deep, intense ones, and she forced herself to look away.
His refusal was swift and sharp. The look in Liliana's eyes had left him deeply unsettled. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and stuck it between his lips. "Let's go."
Disappointed but not showing it, Sylvia followed him. "You're right, you're too busy. Assistant Stanton can just find me a moving company. You can come over after I'm all settled in…"
Cedric didn't respond, just strode ahead, taking long drags from his cigarette.
At the Maybach in the parking lot, he opened the passenger door for her. Sylvia, pleasantly surprised, got in and started touching up her lipstick. Halfway through, she noticed Cedric wasn't in the car. He was standing in front of it, on the phone. The veins on the hand holding the phone were prominent, his profile tense.
A few seconds after the call connected, his face darkened.
For one of the rare times he had ever called her, Liliana had hung up on him.
