"Your life is falling apart, and he has the nerve to go play hero for another woman!" Juniper fumed. "If he had been standing next to you just now, I bet your dad wouldn't have dared to lay a hand on you!"
Liliana's gaze was glued to the screen. The man was the epitome of aristocratic grace, his features perfectly sculpted. But beneath that flawless exterior was a heart of stone.
And in that moment, watching him stand by Sylvia's side, a champion for her cause, Liliana's own heart finally died.
"Junie, what's going on?"
Douglas's gentle voice came from nearby. Juniper contorted her face in a series of grimaces and gestures, pointing at Liliana, who stood frozen, tears glistening on her eyelashes.
The interview on her phone was still playing. Douglas listened for a moment before speaking. "Liliana, do you know much about the legal profession?"
She looked up, her eyes red but her expression strangely calm. "Not really."
"Ian Chase is one of the most famous lawyers in the country, it's true," he said, his eyes filled with a soft sympathy. "But every lawyer specializes in different types of cases. Ian has never handled a setup case like this. Attorney Kerr really is the more experienced choice."
"Bro, are you saying Liliana should thank that jerk Forrest?" Juniper snapped. "Don't you dare take his side!"
"I'm not taking his side. It's just the truth," Douglas replied. He knew there was more to the story of the lawyers, and he couldn't let Liliana remain in the dark.
Liliana's gaze flickered downward. "It's okay, Junie," she said, her voice flat but firm. "It doesn't matter who the lawyer is. Nothing changes the fact that I'm divorcing Cedric."
She had already signed a retainer with Attorney Kerr. Even after the divorce, he would be obligated to continue with Hale's case. She had nothing left to hold her back.
"So, when?" Juniper asked eagerly.
"Thank you, Douglas. I'm sorry you had to see… all this." The last time she'd spoken to him about Cedric, she hadn't mentioned a divorce. It was clear he knew now, and she felt a pang of embarrassment.
He smiled kindly and patted her shoulder. "You don't have to be formal with me."
"Yeah!" Juniper added, linking arms with her. "Just think of my brother as your brother!"
"I don't think that's appropriate," Liliana replied automatically.
"What's not—"
Douglas cut her off. "She's right, it's not. Let's give her some space. We should go."
