A framed photo of her and Cedric sat on the nightstand. It was a picture she had doctored herself; aside from their marriage certificate, they had no photos together. She had chosen Cedric's most handsome portrait and carefully taken one of her own to match.
In the photo, he was dressed in a sharp black suit, his features refined and his aura coolly detached. She wore a simple white dress, fresh-faced and looking up at him with pure adoration. Before, she had never seen anything wrong with it, but now, the more she looked, the more painfully mismatched they seemed.
She took the photo out and cut it in half—it was easy to separate since it had been pieced together digitally. She tossed her own half, the one with eyes full of him, into the trash. The remaining half, of him, she placed back into the frame and returned it to its spot.
Half an hour later, she left with her suitcase. The spare car she had driven from the Preston estate was still there, and she drove straight to a hotel.
With the window halfway down, the cold night air whipped through the car, tangling her long hair. She felt like a mess, yet her mind was painfully clear. Her resolve to divorce was unshakable, but memories of her time with Cedric played out in her mind, frame by frame. She didn't want to go to Juniper's place; she needed to be alone.
She found a decent hotel to stay in for the night. Tomorrow, she planned to find an apartment near Cyan. Amid the chaos of her personal life, she methodically arranged her future. She managed this sliver of peace by keeping her phone on airplane mode, only turning it on to contact landlords or make payments.
She found a two-bedroom apartment in a mid-range complex near Cyan. The rent was four thousand a month, requiring a deposit and three months' rent upfront. After buying some essentials for her new place, she was left with only eight thousand, barely enough to cover a month's living expenses. Thankfully, she would start earning an income when her job began next week.
Once everything was settled, she turned her phone back on. A flood of missed calls and worried messages from Juniper poured in. She sent Juniper a quick WhatsApp message with her new address to let her know she had moved.
Besides Juniper, there were several missed calls and a barrage of messages from Vida.
[Liliana, are you really abandoning Hale?]
Was that heartless?
She didn't reply to Vida. She didn't know what to say.
About half an hour later, the doorbell rang. She walked to the door and peered through the peephole. All she could see was a man's sexy Adam's apple, a crisp white shirt, and a navy-blue tie.
A shiver ran down her spine. According to Cedric, his two-day business trip should be over by now.
She bit her lip, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
