Douglas got out of the car, retrieved a small box from the trunk, and handed it to her.
"They say the stones from Sovereign Peak can ward off bad luck. I picked up a couple on the way… one for you and one for Junie."
Liliana had heard the superstition but didn't believe in it. Still, the fact that he had thought of her was touching. She accepted the box. "Thank—"
"I told you, you don't have to be so formal with me."
Douglas stood by the car, his short hair tousled by the wind. The streetlights reflected in his dark, obsidian eyes. Thanks to Juniper, Liliana knew she would be seeing a lot more of him. Being overly polite would only make things awkward between them.
"Alright. Well, drive safe," she said with a small smile.
She took a step back to move onto the curb, but her foot caught on something, and she lost her balance, stumbling backward.
"Careful!" Douglas lunged forward, one arm wrapping around her waist while the other grabbed her wrist.
The world spun, and Liliana found herself falling into a warm embrace. She had always been terrified of falling; her skin was so delicate that the slightest bump left a bruise. After a moment, the initial shock faded, and the panic in her eyes subsided.
"Are you okay?" Douglas asked, releasing her just as quickly.
Still relieved to have been saved from a nasty fall, Liliana didn't register how intimate the posture had been. "I'm fine! This time, I really have to thank you. You saved my life, Douglas!"
Her dramatic tone made him laugh. "So, how do you plan to repay me?" he teased, lightening the mood.
Liliana, rarely playful, found herself joking back. "Whatever you need, I'll go through fire and water to do it!"
She slept in the next morning. When she finally woke up, she toasted two slices of bread and scrolled through Vida's messages while she ate. It was the same pattern as before: first scolding, then insults, and finally a long-winded complaint about her own hardships. She didn't even bother listening to the last few voice notes.
Instead, she called Attorney Kerr to ask about the case.
"Give me one more week. I'm positive I can find the conclusive evidence we need!" Kerr sounded excited, as if he'd had a major breakthrough.
"Great!" Liliana felt a surge of hope. "So, can I visit him?"
"The visitation request hasn't been approved yet. If you're in a hurry, you could ask Mr. Forrest for help. It would certainly be faster than going through the official channels."
Attorney Kerr was just being practical. Cedric had the kind of influence that could get Liliana in to see Hale immediately.
