"Mrs. Forrest went hiking with Miss Sewell and Mr. Sewell last time," Timothy reported truthfully, hesitating before adding more.
"Look into Douglas's activities since he returned."
For some reason, the sight of Liliana and Douglas together had left a sour taste in Cedric's mouth. It had been a long time since he'd seen her look so pleasant and cheerful with him. It seemed he had been far too lenient with her, allowing her to treat another man better than her own husband.
"Besides taking over the Sewell family business, Mr. Sewell also manages Cyan Design Co." Timothy had already done a background check on Douglas after learning that Liliana had started working at Cyan. However, he knew Douglas had co-founded the company years ago; he hadn't just acquired it for Liliana's sake. So, he hadn't thought much of it. But seeing Douglas there tonight made him less certain.
"Interior design?" Cedric's intuition, which was rarely wrong, flared. He suddenly recalled that Liliana had been wearing a blazer and skirt when he saw her last night. His dark eyes narrowed, a storm brewing in their depths. "Liliana has a job?"
"We found that out last time," Timothy replied indirectly. "You threw the file away."
A bitter laugh escaped Cedric. So, she hadn't come to seduce him last night after all. She had been on her way home from work. No wonder she'd cried like that, looking so reluctant. She felt wronged when he touched her? Who was she trying to save herself for?
His jaw tightened, the muscles flexing. He stared out the window, the neon lights illuminating the fury on his face. He had ordered that no design firm was to hire her. Cyan would have received that notice. The only way Liliana could have gotten a job there was if Douglas had pulled some strings.
The image of Douglas swooping in to rescue Liliana flashed through his mind.
"Keep an eye on them."
Cedric's hand, resting on his thigh, clenched into a fist. He had been too 'gentle' with her just now. He should have crushed her, made her understand that he could destroy her with a flick of his wrist. Then see if she still dared—
"Cedric, I have a meeting with the interior designer to take measurements in a bit. Want to come with me?" Sylvia asked, pushing open his office door just before the end of the workday.
Because of Liliana, Cedric wanted nothing to do with women. "No," he said without looking up.
"What's been wrong with you these past two days? Are you in a bad mood?" Sylvia sat down across from him. "Who or what could possibly affect you this much? You can't keep working like this; you'll burn out. Come with me, and I'll treat you to dinner afterward. You need to relax."
*Affect him?* Cedric's hand paused over his work, and a disdainful smile touched his lips. "Fine."
He would not be affected by Liliana in any way.
