Wild Nights With My Brother's Ex-Best Friend novel Chapter 100

NICOLE

Some weeks pass and I'm working steadily.

Roman has expressed his interest in having me work for him as a secretary the same way I did for Sebastian, but with his situation with this wife or ex-wife unresolved, I'd rather not go anywhere near that building.

He assures me that he's about to take Garith Lowett down, even though I'm not too sure about what he means, and I believe him. He's optimistic and it's contagious.

Though he refrains from talking about it, I can feel that whatever he's planning will happen soon. It excites me, in a sense, because I can't wait to stop looking over my shoulder all the time.

I'm always waiting for something bad to happen and that's no way to live.

I get into work and the first customer I see is Caius—the biker. He and I have gotten a little closer during the past few weeks, and he's even asked me for advice on a present he wanted to give his boyfriend. Once I figured out that he wasn't a creep, it became easier for me to warm up to him.

So far, things seem to be going well.

I'm happy about that.

Everything takes a turn for the worse when this lovely bouquet of red roses is delivered to me, though. When the delivery man walks in and asks for me, the first thing I assume is that Roman is the one who bought them for me.

I sign for it, and my coworkers all around me gush about what a stunning bouquet it is.

Caius says to me, "He's a lucky guy."

"Thanks," I reply timidly before excusing myself and heading to the back so I can put the roses down somewhere and read the note that came along with them.

I open the small, crisp envelope, and the words on the card make my heart skip a beat.

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

You ruined my life—

Now I'm coming for you.

The note isn't signed, but I know it's from Carmen. Has to be.

Who else would have sent me something so threatening?

I'm terrified. Cold fear trickles down my spine and makes goosebumps spread all along my skin. She knows where I work. There's a high chance that she's been watching me this whole time.

I didn't think this was a possibility—as stupid as that sounds.

I run a hand down my face as I shove the note in the pocket of my apron. What do I do? I can't run off in the middle of work. God, Roman was right. He didn't want me to be this exposed.

That woman could have me killed if she wanted it, and I won't be foolish enough to think that I can fight when she's got money and power, and she could have anyone come down here and put a bullet between my eyes.

Taking a shaky breath, I decide to finish my shift. I don't have that much time left anyway. After I get home, I can decide what to do.

I can't put myself at risk because of stubbornness. There has to be another plan. There has to.

"You've got this," I whisper to myself encouragingly before stepping back into the main area.

I'm looking over my shoulder the entire time. I'm terrified of someone walking in here and attacking me. I think of calling Roman the entire day and asking him to pick me up. Gosh, I wish I weren't so scared, but I can't help myself.
