NICOLE
“Isn’t that…Roman?”
I tear my eyes away from him and look up at Mason instead. I nod. “Yes.”
Mason looks confused as he peers down at me and I know why; it’s because I’m confused, too.
“Will you go to him or…I’m not understanding what’s happening or why you look like a lost puppy all of a sudden.”
“I didn’t tell him I’d be here.”
“Did he tell you?”
“No.
”
“Then there’s your answer, Nicole. Come on. I need another drink.” To his colleagues, he says loudly, “Excuse me, everyone. I’ll be back.”
I follow him all the way to the other side of the venue, where the bar is. I look back at Roman but he hasn’t noticed me yet. His face is a mask of no expression. I can’t tell if he’s having a good time or if he’s annoyed.
Mason orders us both drinks. It’s an open bar, so we’re free to get whatever we want. I insist on not wanting anything but he won’t have it. “Get something, Nicole. And if you’re not going to go to him, then stop looking.’
“What’s gotten into you?”
He cuts me a look. “I don’t know. What’s gotten into you?
You know I can’t stand seeing you with him.”
“But you should be used to it by now,” largue.
“Just stop.”
I let out a breath. My drink is handed to me and I take a few sips, but I really don’t want to do this. “You stop. I don’t understand why you’ve chosen to have a problem with my relationship now.”
“I’ve always had a problem with it; I’ve never hidden that from you so don’t try to convince me that I did.” He turns around to look at me with his glass of whiskey in his hand.
“We were up to questionable things in our youth, and now he’s with my sister. It’s never going to sit well with me, so don’t bother.”
“What thing? Well, you already mentioned it. You might as well tell me something!”
“Roman was a freak,” he grumbles, sipping his drink and glaring at me over the rim of the glass.
I fight a smile. “And why is that a bad thing?”
