Wild Nights With My Brother’s Ex-Best Friend novel Chapter 183

ROMAN

My lawyer sits directly across from me. He opens his briefcase and sighs. “Roman.”

I rub my eyes. “Just tell me how to get out of this place. I didn’t kill anyone. I didn’t touch the murder weapon. I was just a wrong place, wrong fucking time scenario.”

Well, I have to be honest with you, don’t I? The situation is more complicated than it seems right now. Sebastian had a restraining order against you. You knew this?”

frun a hand down my face. “He called me. If they check

‘ the phone records, they’ll see it!”

“Alright, Roman. Let’s start with what the prosecution has. You were found at the scene with the victim, who had a restraining order against you. Correct?”

Irritated, I nod.

“I believe you, but that’s beside the point because we’d be having this conversation even if you did it, okay? So, there was a motive, an opportunity, and means. They’ll likely look for prints on the weapon. You didn’t touch it, as you said?”

I nod again.

“Did anyone else know about this call?””No. Not from my side. I didn’t tell anyone.”

“Now, phone records will show the call. As you’ve mentioned. It’ll help that he initiated contact, but it could be anything. Maybe he called you to warn you away, and you went into his office and stabbed him.”

I shake my head. I can see how perfectly framed I am. This is sick and messed up. I mention, “The whole office was empty. There was nobody there. Nobody. On a work day!”

“I wanted to ask you about that. And it’s something we’ll definitely bring up. Now, what did you see as you walked in?”

“Nobody. Not even the secretary was there. The guard in the lobby called Sebastian and was given permission to send me in.”

“That’s good. What else?”

“I went in there and waited in the lobby for some time, then I decided to leave. I didn’t like that he kept me waiting. But then I heard these sounds. It sounded like a struggle. I called his name and he didn’t answer. I heard him coughing or struggling to breathe or something. I broke into the office, and then I saw him.”

“What made you kick the door down?”

“I don’t know,” l admit, scratching my arm. “It was instinct, maybe. I heard him coughing. I wanted to know why he wasn’t answering me. Why he didn’t open the door. Then, saw him. I didn’t touch him. I called the police. I checked the window. The office was a mess. Then, the police showed up.”

“Who called them?”

“I don’t know.”

“Well. You didn’t touch the body, so that’s a good thing.”

“What happens next? When do I get the hell out of here?”

“They’ll arraign you, probably tomorrow. The judge will set bail, but the restraining order might make them assume you’re a flight risk or even a danger. We’ll push back hard on that. I’ll use the phone record as evidence.”

“What are my chances, though?”

“Fifty percent on the bail. We can beat this trial. Oh yes, we can. They don’t have concrete evidence against you.

Your prints aren’t on him. You called the authorities. We have a strong case. Until then, you’re spending the night here, buddy.”

I curse and rub my eyes. Great. This is just what I needed.

I can’t stop thinking about that terrible scene. Sebastian looked so scared. His eyes were wide.

And then, there was the thing he told me before he died.
