NICOLE
Roman stares at me for a long time without saying anything. I’m waiting for his response anxiously, but it feels like an eternity has already passed and it still hasn’t come.
At this point, I’m just assuming the worst. He’ll tell me that I should never have gone there, though I already know that, and he’ll hate me for what I caused.
That’s what I expect.
“I’m sorry,” I tell him. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I didn’t mean any harm by it. I just wanted her to stop. I wanted to understand her motivations and…”
Roman holds my face and looks into my eyes for several seconds before saying, “You’re forgetting that | know that woman and what she’s capable of. I’ve seen it for myself.”
I nod and tears slip from my eyes. He brushes them away with his thumbs.
“I’ll never blame you for what happened. She did it to herself. If anything, your presence there should have helped her figure out that what she was doing was wrong.
It’s not your fault. I believe that. Alright?”
I nod again.
“You’re mine, Nikki,” he claims. “Maybe we’re both terriblepeople for thinking this way, but I’ll never blame you for anything. You’re the one I’ll always defend.”
Yes. I’m starting to get the feeling that we are terrible people indeed. Feeling this way about a woman with a fragile state of mind… don’t know. It doesn’t feel right.
But I do feel bad. I do. I’m worried about the baby more than her. I don’t want anything bad to happen to that child.
“Esmeralda was an addition to my life that I never cared about. How can we be blamed if she didn’t accept reality for what it was? Did she expect me to leave you and marry her? I’m sorry things ended this way, but how much more were we supposed to give?”
I agree with him, but change the subject.
“I can’t believe
all of this happened in one day. I can’t believe it.”
“It’ll all resolve itself.”
“Will it? When do you get out of this place?”
“If they set bail.”.
“If?”
Roman nods. “There are a few complications, specifically the restraining order. I violated it. But he dropped the lawsuit, and he’s the one who called me. We can prove that. If they set bail, then I’ll be home by tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow,” I echo. It just seems so far away.
“Nikki,” he suddenly says, all serious. “I need you to answer me something.”
“Anything.”-
“Do you believe I didn’t kill Sebastian?”
I sniffle and nod. “Of course. I know you didn’t.”
In fact, it never crossed my mind that he did. I know Roman spent a lot of time angry at Sebastian, and he has threatened to kill him before, but I don’t believe that he’d actually go through with it.
I don’t. If I find out he did it, I might die of shock.
“Good. That’s all that matters to me. We’ll make it through this, alright? I didn’t kill him, Nikki. I didn’t even touch him.”
“I know. Don’t worry.”
I hold his hands and he squeezes my fingers tightly. He then says, “There’s something you have to know.
Sebastian said something before he died. When I barged into his office, he was still alive. He was struggling.” The Look in his eyes reflects just how haunted he is by all this. ” He mentioned you. And Angus.”
“Angus?”
Does he have anything to do with this?
I wouldn’t put it past him. Angus is a very problematicperson, and to make matters worse, I saw how close he and Sebastian were. I heard their plotting.
Who knows what else they were discussing?
What if their plans backfired and this gave Angus an excuse to kill Sebastian? This also reminds me of when I went to see him for what I didn’t know then would be the last time. He told me he’d done something bad that he would fix. He looked so stressed.
– Why did he call Roman? What did he want?
How did things end so badly?
“I need you to be careful, Nikki. Do in understand? Be.
Careful. Until we figure out how he was involved in all this, I don’t want you anywhere near him. Angus is a dangerous person. Don’t forget what he did to Garith as soon as he was an inconvenience for him.”
I shudder, but find it in me to nod nonetheless. “I will. I promise.”
A police officer enters the room and claims that our time is up. My heart sinks when he says the words, and I only have to kiss Roman one last time before he’s dragged away.
I’m left in the room alone with my tears and my haunted, messed-up mind. What do I make of all this?
