A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 106

"It won't happen again."

"I don't trust my life in the hands of someone like you."

Fairfax felt a surge of frustration. No matter what he said, she had a sharp, precise rebuttal. He took several deep breaths to steady himself, but before he could speak, she continued, "I nearly died, and your idea of making things right was to get me a simple 'apology.' If I'd actually died, there would have been no one to even argue my case."

"I told you, something like that will never—"

"And I told you, I don't trust you!" she cut in, her voice sharp and final.

Before she could answer, Fairfax snatched the phone from her hand, assuming it was Herbert. He was about to unleash a torrent of rage when Harriet's voice came through the line. "This was your doing, wasn't it?"

"How big was the loss?" Starla asked conversationally.

Fairfax stared at her, stunned.

"It really was you, wasn't it?" Harriet hissed, grinding her teeth so hard they might crack.

"I'm less than a dog, remember?" Starla said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I'm sure a little mess like this is something you can handle easily, Harriet."

By repeatedly throwing Harriet's own words back at her, she twisted the knife. Then, amidst Harriet's sputtering rage, Starla hung up.
