“Is it about Brinley again?” she asked, her voice laced with weary sarcasm.

Fairfax stroked her cheek. “It’s about the babies. It has nothing to do with her.”

“But they’re her babies.”

“Starla…” he began, but her hostility toward the children left him at a loss for words. He wanted to say more, but all that came out was, “Your health has been poor lately. Just stay home and rest. I’ll find the best doctors to help you recover, alright?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“We’ll have children,” he said softly.

Starla’s smile widened into a chilling grin. “So, not only do you believe I wasn’t pregnant, but now you believe I can’t ever have children, either?”

Silence descended again, thick and suffocating.

Fairfax stared at her, a tremor running through him. “You…”

How could she possibly know what the doctor told him?

“You spoke to the doctor? What did she tell you?”

“What could she tell me?” Starla said with a light, almost playful laugh. “Except that someone paid her to tell you I wasn't pregnant. And that I could never have children in my entire life.”

He bit out the last words with particular force.

Without waiting for a response, Fairfax slammed the door behind him.

Molly cautiously approached. “Ma’am, is there anything you’d like for dinner?”

“No, thank you.” She wouldn’t be eating at Petal Villa. She had meant what she said—she would never again eat a single bite of food provided by the Yelchin family.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Molly checked the video intercom. “Ma’am, it’s Clyde, from Harriet’s staff.”

Harriet’s man? Starla smirked. For him to show up now meant that Harriet was finally feeling the pressure.
