But something had changed. Fairfax was no longer the man who would passively accept whatever they said, as he had at the family estate. Now, the name ‘Faraday’ seemed to be a trigger for him, especially when Brinley said it. The look in his eyes was pure revulsion.
Fairfax fixed his cold, disgusted gaze on Brinley. “A child needs a mother who is strong and kind. I hope, for the babies’ sake, you don't develop any inappropriate schemes.”
Darleen and Brinley froze. The word ‘schemes’ hung in the air like a poison dart.
“Faraday… you…?” Brinley stammered, her face a mask of disbelief. “How could you say that to me? That I’m scheming? That I’m not kind? I…!”
Before she could finish, Fairfax’s gaze shifted away from her. He addressed the doctor. “Do everything you can for the child.”
His icy indifference left Brinley breathless and heartbroken. Darleen watched him, seething.
This was all Starla’s fault. That damn woman… why did she have to cause so much trouble? And what was even more infuriating was that Fairfax, instead of divorcing her for her outrageous behavior, seemed to be indulging her more than ever.
The hospital director nodded. “Rest assured, we will do our absolute best for the child. It’s just that…”
He trailed off, glancing worriedly at Brinley. It was clear the baby’s prognosis was not good, especially for one so young.
“Save him,” Fairfax commanded, cutting through the director’s hesitation. He knew what the man was about to say—that the child was too small, the risks too high.
But what did that matter? Keeping the baby alive was their only option. If something happened to him, he couldn’t imagine the chaos Brinley and Darleen would unleash. The Yelchin family had no shortage of money. He didn’t care about the complications that might arise during the process.
To her, a call from Molly was a call from Starla.
Fairfax shot her a glacial look but ignored her comment. Remembering the morning’s events, he answered the call. “Molly.”
A frantic voice burst from the speaker. “Mr. Yelchin, it’s terrible! Petal Villa is on fire! It’s a huge fire, you have to come back!”
Fairfax froze. Brinley and Darleen stared, their mouths agape.
Petal Villa was on fire, too? Harriet’s mansion burned down last night, and now Petal Villa today. Was it a coincidence? Or something else entirely?
