Starla was already back at Cosmos Summit. Knowing she had recently suffered significant blood loss, everyone was careful not to overwhelm her system with anything too rich. Garret had hired a nutritionist to oversee her recovery, and Yardley had strictly forbidden her from leaving the estate. She was sipping a nourishing soup the butler had prepared when Fairfax called.
"Where are you?" Fairfax gritted out over the phone.
He was standing outside Petal Villa, staring at the smoldering ruin. Even after the fire department arrived, it had taken them over ten minutes to extinguish the massive blaze. The entire villa was charred black. While it hadn’t been reduced to a mere skeleton like the house at Vista Bay, it was completely uninhabitable. The whole place would have to be rebuilt.
Fairfax stood in the biting wind, his head pounding.
Starla took another spoonful of soup, ignoring his question. "I had the divorce papers sent to the Yelchin Group. Just sign them."
"I told you, I'm not getting a divorce!" Fairfax's anger flared.
Divorce... was this all because she wanted a divorce?
"What's the point of dragging this out and making everyone miserable?" Starla asked calmly.
“It seems to me you’re the only one who’s miserable!” Fairfax retorted, his voice icy. Clearly, his patience with Starla's escalating antics was wearing thin.
“Oh, I’m quite miserable, I assure you,” Starla replied. “But you make it sound as if the rest of the Yelchin family is perfectly happy.”
Fairfax was speechless.
“Or are you suggesting I should just smile and take it, no matter how terribly they treat me?” she pressed.
“I never said that!” His head was spinning, trying to follow her logic. He’d never realized she had such a sharp tongue.
“Then what did you mean? That I’m the only one who’s miserable? So I’m just supposed to be the Yelchin family’s punching bag? They all get their kicks tormenting me, and if I’m not happy about it, I’m the one in the wrong?”
“Starla, we are still married!”
Her ambiguous reply sent him into a rage. He wanted to assert his authority in their marriage, but his only response was the dial tone. She had hung up on him.
News of the fire at Petal Villa brought Caden and Darian rushing to the scene. Seeing the scorched villa, Caden’s heart skipped a beat.
“Looks like Starla is dead serious about divorcing you,” he muttered.
Fairfax was already on the verge of exploding, and Caden’s comment made him feel like he was about to snap. He shot him an icy glare that made Caden flinch.
“I just…” Caden started, bewildered.
Had he said something wrong? Starla had literally set fire to their home. Wasn’t that a pretty clear sign she wanted out?
