"I know," Starla said.
She was aware of that. But she had already told Fairfax that Herbert had nothing to do with it, and he refused to believe her.
Thinking back, had he believed anything she'd said lately? He hadn't believed she was pregnant. He hadn't believed Brinley was trying to hurt her. He didn't believe anything she said. But he believed every word that came out of Brinley's mouth, and he believed the lies of a bribed doctor.
"The doctor who treated me at the hospital has serious ethical issues," Starla said firmly.
"You mean...?" Garret began.
"Sue her," she finished.
Fairfax believed the doctor's lies, didn't he? Well, she would drag that doctor into court and slap the truth right across Fairfax's face. She was done being patient. She didn't want him to feel regret; she wanted him to see, with his own two eyes, just how blind he had been.
After giving Garret his instructions, Starla went upstairs. She lay down in her room and, after a moment's thought, dialed Fairfax's number.
Fairfax was still at Herbert's place. When he saw Starla's name flash on his screen, he shot Herbert a look cold enough to freeze water.
"Decided to grace me with a call, have you?" he answered, his tone biting.
"Are you still at Herbert's?"
"Get the news already?" Fairfax's voice was dripping with sarcasm at her mention of Herbert.
"Don't give him a hard time. What's between you and me has nothing to do with him."
"Nothing to do with him? Starla, do you take me for a fool?"
Fairfax exploded. He immediately tried to call back, but the call wouldn't go through. In a fit of rage, he threw his phone to the ground.
The act shattered more than just his phone; it pushed the tension between him and Herbert to the breaking point.
Fairfax stood with his hands on his hips, glaring at Herbert. "You two... When the hell did it start?"
The moment the words left his mouth, Herbert snatched his wine glass and hurled it to the floor. It shattered at Fairfax's feet with a sharp crack.
The sudden violence seemed to quell Fairfax's rage, shocking him into silence. The air grew quiet again, but the look the two men exchanged was fraught with danger.
Herbert's voice was a low growl. "Get out."
