A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 137

The drive from Cosmos Summit to the city’s marriage registry was long. Fairfax had said half an hour, but it took Starla nearly fifty minutes to arrive. As she stepped out of the car, she saw him leaning against a nearby Maybach. The sunlight highlighted his exhaustion after a sleepless night.

When he saw her, Fairfax felt a confusing mix of anger and relief. Since when had ‘divorce’ become the only excuse they had to see each other?

His eyes grew even colder when he noticed Garret in the driver’s seat. So, Herbert really had been hiding her.

Starla walked up to him, clutching her small purse.

“Let’s go.”

Her voice was cool, devoid of hesitation or regret. She was completely indifferent to their marriage now.

Fairfax’s eyes narrowed. “You’re that eager to divorce me?”

She simply looked at him, silent. In her mind, there was nothing left to say. Her actions over the past few weeks had made her position perfectly clear.

Her silence was like a knife twisting in Fairfax’s gut.

“You ungrateful woman,” he snarled. “Have I not treated you well all these years?”

“What’s the point of saying that now?” she replied quietly.

He had been good to her, she couldn’t deny it. But a marriage involved so much more than just the two of them. His ties to Brinley and the entire Yelchin family were a weight she could no longer bear. His kindness alone wasn’t enough to make her endure it all. A person’s soul craved freedom; it couldn’t tolerate being stifled forever. Even without her brother Yardley to back her, her marriage to Fairfax had been destined to fail.

“You…” he started, at a loss for words.

“What’s the point of keeping a woman who has another man in her heart?” she asked, her words sharp and deliberate. It was a brutal, calculated blow. After all their years together, she was twisting the knife without a flicker of emotion.

“Are we getting this divorce or not?” she pressed, not wanting to waste another second. They were already there. Her resolve was absolute.

Her question pushed Fairfax over the edge. In a swift movement, he grabbed her arm, and before she or Garret could react, he shoved her into the car.

By the time she processed what was happening, he was in the driver’s seat and the doors were locked. There was no escape.
