When the hospital director learned Fairfax was there because of Darleen, he rushed over to see him. A short while later, Darleen was wheeled out of the operating room. There was nothing seriously wrong; she had simply fainted from a fit of rage.
She was already awake by the time she came out, and the moment her eyes landed on Starla, she lost control.
“Why is she here? Why did you bring her? Get her out! Get her out of my sight! I don’t want to see her!”
Xenia glared at Starla. “Did you hear that? Mom told you to get out.”
“Please, as if I came here to visit her,” Starla scoffed, turning to leave. But just as she stood up, Fairfax grabbed her wrist, his grip like iron.
She met his cold gaze. “Didn’t you hear your mother? She told me to get lost. You know, scram? Are you deaf?”
She had already made it clear she wouldn't tolerate this.
Xenia was about to explode again. “How dare you say that—”
But a single warning glance from Fairfax silenced her instantly. She fumed, seething with resentment. No matter what they had done to Starla in the past, her mother was sick in a hospital bed now. Couldn’t she show a shred of decency? What kind of person speaks to an elder like that?
Brinley decided to try again. “Starla, our mother-in-law just got out of surgery. Please, just say a few words less.”
“The person who needs to shut up is you,” Starla shot back without missing a beat. “You’ve been running your mouth in this family for years. You should be the first to close it.”
Brinley shrank back, looking pleadingly at Fairfax, who wasn’t even looking at her.
Darleen’s chest heaved with fury. “Go! Get out of my sight!”
At that, Fairfax pulled Starla along with him. “Let’s go.”
The atmosphere in the room was suffocating.
“So, what is it? Are you sick or not? Are you going to let us leave or not?” Starla asked, her voice dripping with impatience.
This was a far cry from the woman they once knew. Before, even with her rebellious streak, she had at least maintained the facade of a dutiful wife, enduring their cold shoulders. Now, that one rebellious bone had multiplied, and she was ready to fight anyone who crossed her.
“I told ‘you’ to go!” Darleen snarled.
“Then tell your son to let go of my arm,” Starla replied with a mocking sneer.
Darleen looked at Fairfax’s hand clamped around Starla’s wrist, her expression a mixture of anger and disappointment. That foolish boy!
