Fairfax was wheeled out of the emergency room at the hospital, shaken but alive. The doctor said if he'd been brought in any later, it would have been critical.
Darleen was sobbing, struggling to catch her breath. First Faraday, and now Fairfax had nearly been lost. As she waited outside the ER, she had sworn to herself that if she lost another son, she wouldn't go on living.
"That venomous woman! That witch!" she seethed, recalling that Starla had been the one to serve Fairfax the meal. How deep did that damned girl's hatred for the Yelchin family run? Even if she despised the rest of them, Fairfax had always protected her!
"Mom, when Faraday wakes up, he's going to blame us," Brinley said softly. "Shouldn't we have them release Starla?"
At this point, none of them knew that Starla had never even made it to the station; she had been intercepted on the way. Brinley was merely putting on a show. She knew how much Fairfax cherished Starla. If he woke up and found out they’d had her arrested, his fury would be monumental. Her goal was to distance herself from the fallout as much as possible.
Darleen, already incandescent with rage, was in no mood to hear about letting Starla go. "Absolutely not!" she snapped. "I will not let her get away with this. If Fairfax wants to free her, he'll have to kill me first."
This time, Darleen was determined to make Starla pay, no matter what.
Xenia chimed in, "Brinley, stop defending her. Even if he gets angry, he won't blame you. Mom was the one who called the police, and I was the one who led them to her."
Xenia was just as furious. Thanks to Starla, Fairfax still had her credit cards frozen. That menace should have been kicked out of the Yelchin family long ago.
This time, they didn't just want Starla to pay; they wanted her to rot in that cell forever.
Fairfax scanned the room and saw that Starla wasn't there. His expression darkened. "Where is she?"
"She was arrested," Xenia said flatly.
At her words, Fairfax's face turned to stone. He shot Xenia an icy glare. "What did you say?"
"Faraday, don't blame Xenia," Brinley interjected quickly, positioning herself as the voice of reason. "She was just so worried about you. You should have seen yourself when they brought you in... you were as pale as a ghost."
Xenia added, emboldened, "You treat her so well, and she tries to murder you! Wake up, bro! That woman doesn't love you. She's not worthy of you!"
