A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 174

Without another word, Fairfax turned and walked out, the door closing firmly behind him. Caden was left standing alone, bewildered.

It was true that Herbert had picked Starla up, but what was Fairfax so angry about? He was mad because Starla fed him poisoned broth? What right did he have to be angry? If it were him, he'd have slipped a bag of rat poison into the Yelchin family dinner.

Still, after this stunt, the Yelchins probably wouldn't dare try poisoning Starla again.

After Fairfax left, Caden called Starla. As expected, she didn't answer. He sent her a text, swearing on his life that Fairfax was gone. Finally, she picked up.

"What do you want?" she asked, her tone sharp. She was clearly still upset that Fairfax had used Caden’s phone to trick her.

"He went to find Herbert," Caden said quickly.

On the other end of the line, Starla’s expression darkened. "It seems he's determined to destroy his relationship with his friend."

No matter what happened between them now, Fairfax always managed to drag Herbert into it. She didn't know what to make of him anymore.

"About the poison yesterday," Caden began hesitantly, "did you know who in the Yelchin family did it when you fed it to him?"

"Yes."

Caden was speechless. That was vicious. But he had to admit, it taught the Yelchins a lesson. They thought her life was cheap and tried to eliminate her, so she'd hit back just as hard.

"Who was it?"

"The Matriarch, Annika."

"Right…" Tanya trailed off, processing the last few days of high-stakes drama. "I heard the board at Yelchin Group and some major shareholders are demanding Brinley be removed from her VP position. Think Fairfax will still protect her this time?"

Fairfax had always been fiercely protective of Brinley. Ever since Faraday died, he had cared for her in a way that made many people mistake her for his wife. If Starla hadn't exposed their marriage, he probably would have gone along with the Yelchin family's wishes and married Brinley.

Thinking of that, Tanya suddenly asked, "Why didn't you wait until after the divorce was final to expose everything? You could have just shown everyone the divorce certificate."

Starla froze. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind. At the time, she'd been so consumed with rage, her only goal was to ensure Brinley didn't get her picture-perfect ending with Fairfax.

Now, hearing Tanya’s simple logic, Starla felt her mind go blank. "You're right. Why didn't I just wait and leak the divorce papers?"

Damn it, she was so mad! She had let Fairfax and Brinley, especially Brinley’s constant provocations, get the better of her.
