A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 177

Herbert casually slipped his hands into his pockets. The gold-rimmed glasses gave him the appearance of a refined gentleman, but Fairfax knew the ruthlessness that lay beneath the surface.

"Yes," Herbert confirmed coolly. "We're having lunch together."

The air crackled with tension. A dangerous look crept into Fairfax’s eyes as they filled with a dark, simmering rage.

"Where?" he demanded.

"I think rather than worrying about where we're having lunch, you should be investigating whether Brinley actually has depression," Herbert suggested, his lips curling into a faint, mocking smile.

Fairfax stiffened.

Holding his gaze, Herbert’s smile widened slightly. "After all, the care you've shown her for the past six months was all because she supposedly developed depression after your brother's death, wasn't it?"

With that parting shot, Herbert turned and walked away, signaling to his butler to handle the guest.

The butler nodded and stepped forward as Fairfax moved to follow. "Fairfax, your car is outside."

Herbert had already taken the private elevator down to the garage. Fairfax, seething, tried to shove the butler aside. "Get out of my way!"

Starla had invited Herbert to lunch, which meant he was on his way to see her right now. Fairfax had to catch him, to drag that woman back home.

But as he pushed the butler away, he simply repositioned himself, grabbing Fairfax in a firm hold that stopped him from advancing further. At the same moment, the elevator doors slid shut.

Fairfax's eyes blazed with fury. "I told you to—"

"Mr. Farley is right," the butler said, his voice calm but unyielding. "Instead of chasing after a woman who wants to divorce you, perhaps you should first resolve the issue that made her want a divorce in the first place."

About ten minutes later, Gabriel called back. "Sir, we can't find him."

The words sent a fresh wave of fury through Fairfax, and he nearly smashed his phone against the dashboard. "What are you good for? Huh?"

Gabriel flinched at the outburst. "Mr. Farley's assistant, Rudolf, disabled all the traffic cameras along their route as soon as they left the villa," he explained quickly. "The car only appeared briefly on Ridge Road before vanishing. We have no idea where it went after that."

Fairfax understood immediately. Herbert was deliberately evading him.

"He was on Ridge Road?" Fairfax gritted out.

"Yes, sir."
