A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 201

For a doctor to betray her conscience like that… an investigation is letting her off easy. Who knows what other invisible consequences are waiting for her.

Fairfax raised his glass of red wine and took a sip. He set the glass down. “She’s just a doctor. Why are you targeting her over your issues with Brinley?”

Starla froze, the smile on her face stiffening the moment she heard his words.

“You think I’m targeting her now because of my problems with Brinley?”

“Aren’t you?” Fairfax shot back.

“Fine,” Starla said flatly. “If you say so, then so be it.”

Facing this side of Fairfax, Starla suddenly felt the entire effort was a waste. How could she have forgotten? When it came to her, his first instinct was always to disbelieve her. It had nothing to do with who the other person was. It wouldn't have mattered if it wasn't Brinley.

“I framed her, happy? Like I have nothing better to do than frame some doctor,” Starla’s voice dripped with sarcasm.

Fairfax’s lips thinned into a hard line. “There’s no benefit in it for you.”

“Exactly! Why would I do something that doesn’t benefit me in the slightest?”

Fairfax fell silent. Why, indeed? Could it be…

An idea surfaced in his mind, but he didn’t know if he refused to believe it or was simply afraid to. Perhaps, he was afraid? Afraid that the idea might be true. Because if it were, then the chasm between him and Starla…

Fairfax took a deep breath. “Just forget about it. It’s all in the past.”

From Molly’s perspective, Brinley had always held a special place in Fairfax’s heart, and he used to spend a great deal of time at the family estate. Now that he was finally back and spending more time with Starla, she felt Starla should cherish the opportunity.

“Don’t worry,” Starla said coolly. “Even if we get a divorce, he and Brinley are never getting back together.”

That was Starla’s new philosophy: if she couldn’t have it, no one who schemed for it would get it either. Her relationship with Fairfax was crumbling, but Brinley, who had plotted against her for so long, would never get her happy ending with him. She had already torpedoed their chances, and the thought brought her a grim satisfaction.

“But you should still…” Molly began.

“Molly!” Starla cut her off, her gaze sharpening. “Just do your job.”

She knew Molly meant well, but she couldn’t stand to hear another person sing Fairfax’s praises.
