A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 210

She was just waking up from the anesthesia and her head was still foggy. "The smell of your cologne is making me sick," she said sharply.

Fairfax froze. So did Gabriel.

Gabriel had been about to inform Fairfax that the medical team was already on its way to Luwood Mountain, but Starla's comment filled the small car with an icy tension, and he wisely kept his mouth shut.

Fairfax looked down at the woman in his arms, then reached out and gripped her chin. "You find me disgusting?"

Starla tried to jerk her head away, but his grip only tightened.

"Answer me."

"You know perfectly well whether you're disgusting or not," she retorted.

"Yes, I am," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "But don't worry. I plan on disgusting you for the rest of your life."

Gabriel wished he could disappear. When the bosses fought, it was always the people under them who suffered the most.

An hour later, they arrived at Luwood Mountain. Starla knew there was no escape, and her body was too weak from the ordeal to fight. She let Fairfax carry her out of the car. A gust of wind hit her, and a sharp pain shot through her head. A cold front had moved in, and the temperature on the mountain was always a few degrees lower than in the city.

Shivering, Starla curled into herself.

Fairfax glanced down at her. "Cold?"

She refused to even look at him. He pulled his jacket tighter around her and strode into the mansion.

Molly, who had followed in another car, hurried to catch up.

The house was warm, with the heat turned up high. Fairfax carried Starla straight to their bedroom.

"For the next month, you're staying in this bed."

"Don't worry, the preparations are already underway. Mr. Hoggart is handling the arrangements on the Yoran Country side."

"Good."

In the study, Gabriel found Fairfax smoking, restlessly flipping a lighter in his hand. He looked incredibly agitated.

"Sir," Gabriel said, approaching him.

"Did you find out?" Fairfax asked.

"Dr. Flavia still denies being bribed by Harriet and Brinley. She insists it was her own misdiagnosis."

At Gabriel's words, a deadly glint appeared in Fairfax's eyes. "She won't confess?" he murmured, the words laced with ice.
