A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 220

When they were eating earlier, Starla had asked if the food was poisoned. Fairfax had assumed she was now paranoid about everyone in the Yelchin household. But he was wrong. By forcing Fairfax to drink from the soup Annika had intended for her, Starla had sent a clear warning to the entire family. Annika might be willing to risk her own life to drive her out, but after seeing her grandson's life endangered, not even she would dare to try poison again.

"It's not about poison," Starla said. "I just don't want to drink it."

"Mr. Yelchin said I am to watch you drink it," Molly replied, her expression pained.

Starla sighed. The man was unbelievable. Didn't he get tired of fussing over a woman who clearly wanted nothing to do with him?

Seeing Molly’s predicament, Starla finally relented and drank the juice.

Just then, the sound of a car engine starting up outside drifted through the window. Fairfax was leaving.

Starla put down the empty glass and walked to the window, just in time to see his Maybach pulling away. Her phone buzzed in her hand. A text from Fairfax: [Be good. Don't even think about running.]

A small, defiant smile touched Starla's lips.

"You can go now," she said coolly to Molly.

"Madam…" Molly began, wanting to urge her not to fight with Fairfax. But one look at Starla's face, and she fell silent. "Call us if you need anything."

Before Starla could get a word in, she continued, her tone shifting to a desperate, broken plea. "Give her back to me! I know you hate me. Take it out on me, do whatever you want, but leave the baby out of this! I'm begging you!"

Even in her supposed begging, Brinley’s voice was laced with an ingrained arrogance. They were so used to being in charge, they couldn't even sound truly desperate.

"Are you insane?" Starla finally cut in. "If your baby is missing, go find her. Why are you calling me?"

Whatever Brinley had lost, Starla felt no sympathy.

"Because you're the one who took her!" Brinley shrieked, her voice cracking. "Where did you hide her? Starla, I swear, if anything happens to my daughter, I will kill you!"
