A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 224

The thought of losing her granddaughter so soon after her son was too much for Darleen to bear. She felt as if her world was collapsing all over again. She couldn't face Faraday in the afterlife if she failed to protect his child.

Fairfax closed his eyes, a muscle twitching in his jaw.

"No matter what, make her promise not to hurt the baby," Darleen pleaded. "Whatever she wants, we'll give it to her."

"So now you're willing to give her what she wants?" Fairfax shot back, his voice dripping with ice.

Just then, a security guard shouted, "Found him! This is the man who took the baby!"

Every head in the room snapped toward the monitor. The screen showed a tall man in a baseball cap carrying the child. Though the cap obscured much of his face, the visible parts of his jawline and profile clearly marked him as a man from Yoran Country.

"He’s from Yoran Country?" Darleen breathed.

At those words, Fairfax went rigid. Something in his mind shattered.

Brinley’s voice was choked with sobs. "A man from Yoran Country? Isn't that like the one with Starla…"

She trailed off, her wide, tear-filled eyes locking onto Fairfax.

Darleen's mind made the connection instantly. "See! I told you it was Starla! You wouldn't believe me, but it was her! That man she has with her is from Yoran Country too! It has to be her! What is she trying to do?"

In an instant, the suspect's origin solidified Starla's guilt in their minds. The room filled with Darleen's accusations and Brinley's heartbroken cries.

"I'm calling the police! I'm calling them right now!" Brinley fumbled for her phone, her hands shaking too much to dial.

She reached for her own phone to call the police herself.

Fairfax intercepted her, taking her phone as well.

Darleen was furious. "What are you doing?"

"If it was her, I will bring the child back to you," Fairfax vowed, each word heavy with resolve.

Darleen’s heart constricted. "You're still protecting her? Is this really the time to be protecting her?" Darleen shrieked. Before Fairfax could respond, she screamed, "That baby isn't even a month old, and she's been missing for hours! Fairfax, if she dies, how could you face your brother? You two can fight all you want, but why did you have to drag an innocent child into it?"

Darleen was truly losing her mind, consumed by a frantic fear for the baby's life. Brinley lowered her head, her shoulders shaking with sobs. But hidden from view, a fleeting glint of triumph and extreme cruelty flashed in her eyes.
