A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 261

Seeing Fairfax remain silent, Gabriel pressed on.

“Besides, if Darleen reports it to the police, it might actually be for the best,” he suggested.

“Lately, your wife has been acting out so intensely. She seems to have forgotten that all her power, all her ability to…”

Gabriel paused, choosing his next words carefully. He didn't need to finish the sentence. The implication was clear: Starla’s ability to wreak havoc was a power granted to her by Fairfax. She only dared to act so boldly because he was always there, backing her up. Without his support, she was nothing in Marina City.

It was a subtle but pointed reminder.

Fairfax’s eyes opened. “What about Herbert?” he asked, his voice laced with a raw, guttural anger. The recent closeness between Herbert and Starla was something he couldn't comprehend, and it infuriated him, especially since Herbert was supposedly in marriage talks with his sister, Xenia.

While the Farley family elders hadn’t given their official approval, Herbert’s constant presence around Starla at such a delicate time was deeply inappropriate.

At the mention of Herbert, Gabriel’s expression tensed. “As for why Mr. Farley has been spending so much time with her… that’s difficult to say.”

“Isn’t it because he’s in love with her?” Fairfax shot back, the words tasting like acid in his mouth.

Gabriel blinked, surprised by his boss’s bluntness. “I think that’s unlikely, sir. Even if Mr. Farley did have such feelings, the Farley family would never approve.”

Fairfax fell silent.

The Farley family. Of course. There were generations of elders to consider. Did Starla really think she could divorce him and simply run off with Herbert? She was being naive. A family like the Farleys would never accept a divorcée as a daughter-in-law.

In this impossible situation, this was the only thing he felt he could do.

“I understand, sir,” Gabriel nodded.

Silence hung in the air.

Gabriel tentatively asked, “Shall we go to the meeting now?”

Hoggart Group was breathing down their necks, and that was another battle Fairfax had to fight. Facing off against a corporate titan that controlled half the globe was not a promising prospect.
