Caden believed Fairfax was taking things too seriously, thinking he had a duty to take care of his brother's children.
But was it really about the children? Was he blind to Brinley's intentions, or just pretending not to see? If he kept this up, he was going to lose his family.
Seeing Fairfax just drink without answering, Caden pressed him. "What did you two fight about this time?"
They all knew that Starla had been on a rampage lately—burning down houses, stirring up public scandals, fighting tooth and nail with Brinley just to get a divorce.
Fairfax closed his eyes. "It's over."
Caden and Darian went still.
"What? It's... over?" Caden couldn't believe his ears.
Darian was just as shocked. "How could you agree to a divorce?"
Starla had raised hell, and Fairfax had refused to budge. What had changed? Caden and Darian exchanged a stunned glance.
"What did she do this time?" Caden asked again. If all her previous stunts hadn't worked, this must have been something huge. What could possibly be bigger than arson?
"The girl from the twins... is dead," Fairfax said, his voice heavy.
Caden and Darian felt a jolt run through them. They stared at him, then at each other, before their eyes snapped back to Fairfax.
In all the years Starla had been married to Fairfax, their relationship had been good. From what Caden knew of her, she wasn't capable of something so monstrous. She hated Brinley, but she'd never once touched the children. Why would she do it now, just for a divorce?
Fairfax remained silent, but his rage found an outlet. He smashed the half-empty bottle in his hand against the stone steps, sending shards of glass flying everywhere.
Caden and Darian flinched. The fury radiating from him left them speechless. How could they possibly offer advice in a situation like this?
Still, Darian couldn't help but try. "Starla doesn't seem like that kind of person. Maybe there's been some kind of misunderstanding?"
Caden nodded emphatically. "Yeah, there has to be a mistake."
He would sooner believe Brinley had killed her own child and framed Starla than accept that Starla was a murderer. Brinley was absolutely capable of something so vile. In fact, he couldn't think of anyone else in Marina City who could pull off something so wicked.
