Starla had always been level-headed. She knew she, an orphan, was no match for a man of Fairfax's status and had repeatedly rejected him. It was Fairfax who had pursued her across the globe until she finally gave in.
Now, he was completely wasted.
"But even after that damn woman turned so rotten, I still goddamn love her! If she dares get with Herbert, I'll kill him…"
Darian and Caden exchanged a pained look. This was torture!
Seeing Fairfax finish the bottle, Darian opened another and handed it to him. "Drink."
"What are you doing?" Caden tried to grab the bottle. "You're giving him more?"
"He's not passed out yet, is he?" Darian retorted. "You want to listen to this all night?"
As his friends, they couldn't just leave him. The river was right there. If they left and he did something stupid in his drunken state, they'd feel guilty for the rest of their lives. But listening to him was becoming unbearable.
So Darian poured two more bottles down Fairfax’s throat until he was completely incoherent, unable to form a single word, though he still mumbled Starla's name.
Caden looked at Darian. "I never realized you were so ruthless."
He had literally drunk him into a stupor!
Darian just shrugged. "Did you want to keep listening to his incoherent ramblings about Brinley's hardships?"
"No!" Caden snapped. What hardships? The woman lost her husband and immediately started lusting after her brother-in-law. For all Caden knew, she might have had something to do with her husband's death. Otherwise, how could she so shamelessly pursue Fairfax?
…
Starla had gone to bed early and woke up early, just after seven. Her first call was to the police. She had just hung up when Caden called.
"Did you and Fairfax really get a divorce?" he asked immediately.
"Would I lie about something like that?" Starla replied.
"Then be careful about the child's death," Caden warned, his voice serious.
He couldn't shake the feeling of unease. After leaving Fairfax, he'd been thinking about it all night. No matter how he looked at it, he couldn't believe Starla would harm a child. She had her limits. Brinley, on the other hand… a woman who would go after her brother-in-law right after her husband's death had a seriously warped moral compass. A person like that was capable of anything.
