The restaurant's unique architecture ensured every private dining room had a stunning ocean view and offered the utmost privacy. Herbert had taken Starla there… to be alone?
"They're already going on dates?" Fairfax's voice was dangerously low.
That damn Starla. They weren't even divorced yet. How could she? Fairfax felt an almost uncontrollable urge to strangle her.
Hearing the word 'dates,' Gabriel didn't know how to respond. The atmosphere was so frigid that a single wrong word felt like it could set off an explosion.
Without another word, Fairfax snatched his phone and dialed Starla's number.
…
At The Waterfront, Herbert placed a bowl of soup in front of Starla in their panoramic private dining room.
"The food here has had an excellent reputation since it opened. You should try it," he said.
"Thank you."
"How are you feeling now?" he asked, his tone gentle. A hint of something akin to sorrow, almost imperceptible, lay hidden in his deep eyes. He felt a profound sense of regret for Starla's situation. If only he had known sooner that she was going to marry Fairfax, perhaps things could have been different. Or maybe, as she said, it was fate—her mother's will from beyond.
These days, she had turned the Yelchin family upside down. If she continued, they would all be driven mad.
Starla nodded. "Much better."
Seeing her silence, Herbert added, "You know what that means. After everything that's happened, he's still reluctant to let you go. If he finds out the truth about all this…"
He didn't need to finish the sentence. Starla knew exactly what he meant.
"Regardless of whether he uncovers the truth or not," Herbert said, his voice firm, "you two cannot continue together."
"I know," Starla replied calmly. "But don't worry. Soon enough, he'll be the one begging me for a divorce."
Hearing the conviction in her voice and seeing the determination in her eyes, Herbert understood. He knew exactly what she planned to do once she re-entered the Yelchin home. The days ahead for the Yelchin family would be dark, filled with unrelenting fear.
