Finally, Fairfax succumbed to the alcohol, slumping unconscious against Darian.
Darian grimaced, looking at Caden. "Take him back to the Yelchin estate?"
"No, let's just get him a hotel room," Caden replied. The estate was surely in chaos, and Fairfax clearly wanted to be anywhere but there.
Thinking of Starla, Caden had to admit he was impressed.
The Yelchin clan had it coming. Though he was Fairfax’s friend, he couldn't deny that Darleen and Xenia were unpleasant people. And Brinley was another story altogether. Only Fairfax seemed blind to the predatory way she had looked at him at work back when his older brother was still alive.
They managed to get Fairfax to a hotel, but their plan hit a snag. The front desk clerk took one look at Fairfax's ID and handed it back.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we have instructions from management. Mr. Fairfax Yelchin is not permitted to stay at our hotel."
Caden and Darian stared at her, then at each other, as if she'd spoken in an alien language.
"What did you just say?" Caden demanded. "Say that again."
This was Marina City. A hotel in Marina City refusing to accommodate Fairfax Yelchin? Had the management lost their minds?
The clerk maintained her professional smile. "My apologies."
No further explanation was offered, but her polite refusal was absolute.
Frustrated, Caden and Darian dragged Fairfax to several other hotels, only to receive the same response. They even tried booking a room under their own names, but as soon as they tried to help Fairfax inside, they were stopped by security. Defeated, they returned to the car.
Caden flinched. The thought sent a chill down his spine.
Darian had a point. Starla was on a rampage against the Yelchins. Anyone who dared to shelter one of them would likely become her next target. The risk was too great.
"Never mind," Caden said quickly. "Let's just take him back to his family estate."
Neither of them was brave enough to cross Starla right now. And so, after some deliberation, Caden and Darian drove the unconscious Fairfax back to the one place he dreaded most.
...
Meanwhile, inside the mansion, Darleen was starving. She had only had one meal out all day. She crept down to the kitchen for a snack, but her path was blocked. Starla’s people were working in shifts, and even at this late hour, the kitchen entrance was guarded.
